Basketball Free Picks - May 11, 2010

Today's NBA Basketball Picks:

Game: Boston at Cleveland (8:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 2 units on First Half UNDER 98.5 -110 (risk 2 to win 1.8)

This series is now knotted at two games apiece and so much is on the line for both teams here. That means defenses are likely to take the court early in this one to gain an edge. There is a solid foundation in the playoffs in general with 57% of all of the last 2,134 playoffs games having seen the first half play UNDER. That likelihood gets a boost when you have a home team off a 10+ point win, facing a very good team (winning 60%-75% of their games). Those numbers are 82-48 to the first-half UNDER or 63.1%. I'll go with the first-half UNDER in this one.

The Boston Celtics made amends for their disastrous game three when they suffered their largest home playoffs loss ever, when the Cavaliers took them out by 29 points. They have evened the series with most games not close, so I would expect this to be played like a game seven, with the winner in the driver's seat. That usually means defense. The Cavs have historically played UNDERs in the conference semi-finals, with a 19-7 mark to the UNDER in their last 26 in this round. There has also been a long-term trend favoring the UNDER here, which is playing UNDER when the total is posted in the 190s when the game features a team revenging a loss vs. an opponent off a 10+ point home win. This has cashed the UNDER in 60% of the last 180 occurrences. I'll play the UNDER in this one.
