Nba Free Picks - February 22, 2009

Today's NBA Basketball Picks:

Game: Boston at Phoenix (2:30 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Phoenix -2 (-110) (risk 3 to win 2.7)

The Celtics are without KG and the Suns are on fire. Phoenix has put up 140+ in all three games since the coaching change. Unfortunately for Phoenix it looks like they will be without Amare Stoudemire for the rest of the regular season thanks to a detached retina. The new run-and-gun style for the Suns will present problems for Boston on the road here without Garnett. Phoenix is 16-10 at home and this is a statement game of sorts for them. The 140 performances have come against the Clippers and Oklahoma City. If they lose this game, they lose the momentum they have built. In addition, the Suns have the revenge factor as they were beaten by Boston by 17 points back in January and Phoenix is 30-16 ATS the past three seasons revenging a same-season loss. I like the resurgent Suns to get it done at home here.

This total is set low - but not low enough. These two teams when they meet simply play defense and go UNDER the posted total. Over the past three seasons 12 of the 16 games have gone UNDER the total including five of seven here in Cleveland. The average score in the past five games? 166.2 total points per game. Not much of a surprise given that Detroit is 44-26 UNDER the past two seasons vs. a winning team including a ridiculous 16-5 UNDER vs. teams with a record of .700 or better. This season Detroit is 7-0 UNDER revenging a home loss. This one should play out like the rest of the meetings between these two teams that know each other so well - a defensive battle and an UNDER.
