Basketball Predictions - April 24, 2009

We posted another nice night on the NBA hardwood as we hit both of our picks, anchored by Utah's outright win as a +3.5 dog as they finally stood up to the Lakers. Our five-month NBA run is now up to 252-201 as or $100 per-unit players have banked $9,000 (+90 units). Four NBA picks today, including a 5-unit play.

Today's NBA Basketball Picks:

Game: Cleveland at Detroit (7:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Detroit +5 (-110) (risk 3 to win 2.7)

The Cleveland Cavaliers have blown through their home schedule and destroyed everyone, to the tune of a double-digit winning margin. They have been successful on the road, but against the teams in this year's playoff field, the Cavs haven't been nearly as good. They have a 12-10 record on the road against these teams, with one of the losses coming in Detroit. They have also been outscored by these teams in the 22 games, so the indestructible force at home, has been quite vulnerable on the road in this type of setup. While the Pistons as a whole aren't what we have seen in the past several years, they are more than capable of winning here. The Pistons took down Orlando three times, Denver twice, and the Lakers, Cleveland, Portland, and Boston. So before you pencil Cleveland into the next round, there is solid evidence that the Pistons still have enough to at the very least be competitive here, if not win. I'll go with Detroit.
Game: Orlando at Philadelphia (8:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 5 units on Philadelphia +3.5 (-110) (risk 5 to win 4.6)
Pick: 3 units on First Half UNDER 96.5 -110 (risk 3 to win 2.7)
The Philadelphia 76ers stole game one from Orlando, after Orlando seemed to have them put away. That brings them home where they can now claim home-court advantage for what has become a best of five series, with potentially three games being played in Philly. Orlando is now just 1-7 ATS in their last eight games! The Sixers have had an impressive track record at home when listed as a short dog of up to +4.5, as they are now 10-3 ATS in their last 13 games in that situation. They have also been a top defensive team at home as only four of their last 29 home games have gone over 200 points scored. In the first two played in Orlando, the first-half total never got over the first half total posted for this one. The Sixers are 26-13 UNDER in the first half at home the past three seasons coming off a road loss. I look for Philly to come out with a defensive resolve early, and I like them to cover game three and will back them. I will also take the first-half UNDER in this one.
Game: Orlando at Philadelphia (8:05 PM Eastern)
Pick: 2 units on Philadelphia +150 (moneyline) (risk 2 to win 3)
I mentioned that Philadelphia has been 10-3 ATS at home when listed as a short underdog of up to +4.5. The Sixers have also gone 7-4 straight up in their last 11 when listed as a dog of +4.5 or less. The Magic have lost six of their last ten games outright and under Van Gundy, this team has really underperformed in April games. I like them in this one to not only cover against the spread, but to win this game straight up.

Results: 2-2
