Nba Free Pick - April 13, 2009

Today's NBA Basketball Picks:

Game: Toronto at Washington (7:30 PM Eastern)
Pick: 2 units on Toronto +2.5 (-110) (risk 2 to win 1.8)

Although it is too late for both these teams to do anything this season, the Wizards have not earned the right to be favored here. The Wizards have been favored 14 times on the season, and have been 4-10 ATS in those 14 games. Toronto has won seven of their last 11 games, and has a revenge motive here as they lost their last game vs. the Wizards by two points. The Wizards’ futility has made it difficult to put together two good games in succession, as they are 3-8 ATS after a straight-up win. The better team is getting points here, and playing with revenge, so I'll back the Raptors in this one.

The Orlando Magic is struggling mentally and physically right now. They lost the chance to be the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference Playoffs, and have not played well down the stretch at a paltry 3-4 in their last seven. The injuries have mounted, and it would be hard to believe they are going to risk anymore here. The Bucks have had to deal with their own injury issues this season, but that hasn't stopped them from having a winning record at home. The Magic have two reasons to be a no-show here. They have nothing to gain except more injuries, and nothing to gain otherwise as well. I look for a no-show Magic team, and will take the Bucks in this one.

The Houston Rockets have saved their best basketball of the season for last. They have now gone 21-7 over their last 28 games, and at home they are now 17-2 in their last 29! The Hornets are not closing strong as they are just 2-4 in their last six games, and are now just 2-7 on the road in their last nine against winning teams. As a road dog, they have been a futile 8-21 ATS in their last 29 games. The Rockets have been powerful off an ATS loss as they are now 36-17-1 ATS after an ATS loss. Both of these teams have been in the top 10 in fewest points allowed all season. The Hornets are 7-0-1 in their last eight on the road to the UNDER against teams with a winning record, while Houston is an amazing 10-1 to the UNDER in their last 11 against a team that is .600 or more. I like Houston and the UNDER in this one.

What goes up must come down and what gets hot must cool off, and such is the case with the Utah Jazz. The Jazz were a red-hot team going 15-1 and destroying everyone in their path, but have since gone the other way. The Jazz are now just 6-10 in their last 16 following the impressive run, and an even worse 3-13 ATS. There have been straight-up losses to Golden State and Minnesota during in this stretch, so this one is a bit hefty based on their play the over the last three weeks or so. This is a Clippers team that lost to the Lakers by just three points just a week ago, and I like them to stay within the lofty number vs. a struggling Utah team.
