Mlb Pick - September 24, 2008

Today we feature four premium MLB picks...

Today's MLB Baseball Picks:

Game: New York Yankees at Toronto (7:05 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on New York Yankees +131 (moneyline) (risk 3 to win 3.9)

Once the Yankees were basically out of the pennant race they have begun to play the way they are capable. It seems as if the pressure has been relieved, and now they just go out relax, win, then go home. The Bombers have won six straight and nine of 10, but the real story is that the bullpen is suddenly rock solid with Phil Coke (0 runs in 12+ innings), Scott Brune (below two ERA), Joba Chamberlain and Rivera at the end. This has translated to nine runs scored on the Bombers in the last six games or 1.5 per game. The pen has worked 23 innings in these six games and allowed two runs good for a 0.78 ERA and has also recorded 26 k's. That spells trouble for a Toronto team that has had quiet bats of late, getting shutout three times in their last 11 and producing next to nothing at three runs a game over their last eight. The Yankees finally have some value, and I'll grab them as a dog.

Game: Arizona at St Louis (8:15 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on St Louis -121 (moneyline) (risk 3 to win 2.5)

Arizona's loss last night puts them on life support in the NL West, and their overall slide down the stretch has virtually done them in. A team that is closing out at 12-21 doesn't deserve to make the playoffs. They will face Adam Wainwright tonight who has been the Cards’ stopper and best pitcher all season. The Cards are an impressive 14-5 in his 19 starts, and 13 of those finished with him allowing two runs or less! The Cards are also 9-1 in his 10 home starts, where his ERA shrinks to just 2.60. What is even more impressive is that the Cards are 7-0 at home with Wainwright on the mound against teams .500 or better. Lots of value here, so I'll back the Cards.

Game: Los Angeles Angels at Seattle (10:10 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Los Angeles Angels +122 (moneyline) (risk 3 to win 3.7)

Not too often do you get a team on the verge of 100 wins against a team on the verge of 100 losses as a moderate-sized dog, but that's the case in this one. Most feel the Angels are just lying down and awaiting the playoffs, but there is some unfinished business at hand. The Rays sweep yesterday leaves them just behind the Angels for the all important home field advantage throughout the playoffs. Maybe it is the fact that Felix Hernandez toes the rubber tonight for the M's? Not good enough as the Angels have had no trouble solving King Felix serves this season. The Angels have 25 hits in 20.2 innings off Hernandez, and his ERA is at 4.79. It also hasn't helped the M's much as they have dropped his last four starts. I'll take the value on the Angels here.

Game: Colorado at San Francisco (10:15 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Colorado +114 (moneyline) (risk 3 to win 3.4)

While the Rockies have done nothing all season against right-hand pitchers where they are 48-65, they have certainly fared much better against lefthanders where they are 24-20. They get a shot at one tonight in Jonathon Sanchez who allowed six runs his last time out and did not survive the fourth inning. Sanchez has been making abbreviated outings the norm as he has pitched to a 6.49 ERA over his last 11 starts, and he was gone in five innings or less in seven of those. The Rockies are 5-3 in their last eight and took down Tim Lincecum last night, so the lineup is producing against a top-flight pitcher. The Rockies now get a shot at a struggling lefty where they have been at their best. We have a live dog here, so I'll back the Rockies.
