Baseball Predictions - September 23, 2008
Today we hit the MLB diamond running with three premium picks...
Today's MLB Baseball Picks:
Game: Pittsburgh at Milwaukee (8:05 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Pittsburgh +185 (moneyline) (risk 3 to win 5.6)
The Brewers are doing their best to impersonate what the Mets did last year and fall to pieces down the stretch. Something they quietly did themselves last year as well. The Brewers are just 5-15 over their last 20 games and are surviving in the wildcard race only because the Mets can't win either. They will send Dave Bush to the rescue, but he has been unsuccessful in September, as the Brewers are 0-4 in his September starts with opponents scoring seven runs a game. The Pirates can perhaps find some salvation in spoiling it for the Brewers. It seems that as the need to win grows, the Brewers get further from the win column and the oddsmakers keep jacking up the price. As a result the only value to be found here is on the Pirates.
Game: Cincinnati at Houston (8:05 PM Eastern)Pick: 3 units on Houston -119 (moneyline) (risk 3 to win 2.5)
Houston remains hopeful of securing a wildcard berth and has crept to within three games in the loss column of the once again faltering Mets. The ‘Stros have made a leap forward into the wildcard race by going 35-17 over their last 52 games. Wandy Rodriguez has allowed just one run in his last three starts, good for an ERA of 0.66 and is a hot pitcher right now. He has also allowed just three runs in his last two starts against the Reds covering 13.2 innings of work. Edinson Volquez has had a breakout season for the Reds, but his best work came prior to June 20, where he pitched to a 1.71 ERA with 110 k's in just 95 innings. Since then he has pitched to a 4.93 ERA, and the innings have taken their toll. So the overall numbers hold this line down, but his last half-season dictate otherwise, value on the Astros here.
Game: Los Angeles Angels at Seattle (10:10 PM Eastern)Pick: 3 units on Los Angeles Angels -137 (moneyline) (risk 3 to win 2.2)
The oddsmakers have acted like these are meaningless games for the Angels since clinching the AL West. They are severely under-valued right now, as they attempt to secure home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. If they are resting players, then why were Guerrero, Texiera, and Hunter in the lineup last night? They have won eight of their last 10, which says something by itself. The Mariners are the team that is packing suitcases, and mentally out of the game. They have dropped 12 straight and the only thing on their mind is playing that last game Sunday and then go home. I'll take the value here and ride with the Angels at a bargain price.
