Today's MLB Baseball Picks:
Game: Milwaukee at Pittsburgh (12:30 PM Eastern)
Pick: 4 units on Milwaukee +115 (risk 4 to win 4.6)
Tom Gorzelanny has had a good year for a bad team. It has translated into a 14-7 record. The bad news is when he is left out of the decision the Pirates are 0-7! So overall the Pirates are just 14-14 in his starts. The problem is the pen has coughed up the other seven games. Gorzelanny has also been forced by his success to log a lot of innings. He has reached 178, and that is by far more than he has thrown in the big leagues, and tops his minor league highest total by 50 pitches. The result is his ERA is at it's highest of the season. The Brewers are at their best against LHP, where they have gone 27-21. Dave Bush got off to a slow start, but the Brewers are now 11-6 in his last 17 starts, and Bush is off a game where he allowed eight runs. He has had three other horrible outings this season, where he allowed six runs or more. He has bounced back from a horrible start by posting a 2.70 combined ERA in his next start! The Brewers have been a hot team as they are now 8-3 over their last 11 games. The Pirates are playing out the string, and have only been 5-9 over their last 14. The Brewers claim game 3, and the series.
Game: Texas at Detroit (7:05 PM Eastern)Pick: 3 units on Texas +207 (risk 3 to win 6.2)
Texas won for us in the early game yesterday and dropped the late one. It was their first loss in seven games and only their third in the last sixteen! They are red-hot right now, averaging 7.1 runs per game over their last seven. They certainly have the starting pitcher disadvantage here but they have the better bullpen. Detroit is 25-14 vs. left-handed starters this season but they are a very mediocre 54-53 for -9.9 units vs. righties. Texas is 30-31 for +10.7 units vs. winning teams as they continue to get disrespected in the line-setting. Again here, we have tremendous value on a very hot team getting better than 2-to-1 odds vs. a team they have shown they can beat. The Rangers have won 8 of the last 14 games played here in Detroit including two of three this season.
Game: Los Angeles Angels at Baltimore (7:05 PM Eastern)Pick: 3 units on Baltimore +152 (risk 3 to win 4.6)
Kelvim Escobar has been lights-out most of this season. But he's showing signs of slowing down (ERA pushing 5.00 his past three starts vs. 3.04 overall on the year). As a favorite of -150 or more, he's just 27-29 in his career. The Angels have struggled to put up runs all season long on the road (4.5 per game) and right now they're not scoring much overall (4.6 per game over their last seven). We think the Orioles have a shot here and at these odds, we'll take that shot on the home dog.
Game: Atlanta at New York Mets (7:10 PM Eastern)Pick: 5 units on New York Mets -105 (risk 5 to win 4.8)
New York has won nine of their last eleven and look for John Maine to win the series vs. Atlanta. Maine is 14-9 with a 3.80 ERA. He's facing John Smoltz who has been great this season but the Mets are so hot right now we think they take this one. New York has an incredible 27-8 mark this year vs. NL pitchers with an ERA of 3.50 or better. They also crush RHP (59-43 for +6.3 units). Atlanta is just a smidge over .500 on the road this season and they have a way of letting down off big wins. They are 11-22 off a win by 4+ runs this season. We look for the Mets to bounce back from last night and win the rubber game.
Game: Oakland at Seattle (10:05 PM Eastern)Pick: 3 units on Seattle +112 (risk 3 to win 3.4)
Dan Haren started off the year going 14-4 with a sub-3 ERA. That's the good news. The bad news is that he's 0-3 with a 7.02 ERA in his last three starts. Seattle has been skidding but this is a good opportunity to pull out of it. They are 41-29 on thee season at home and their offense has been solid. They have just been giving up runs in bunches (9 per game on average over their last seven!). But the A's are not a team to put up a lot of runs. Oakland has struggled offensively all season (4.5 runs per game) and especially vs. right handed pitchers (4.2 runs per game). Yes, this is a good spot for the Mariners as theya re 21-10 on the year vs. AL opponents that bat .255 or worse. Batisita is 12-2 in his career at home vs. teams that bat .265 or worse. We look for Seattle to win this one.
Results: 2-3
