Premium Picks

Game: Pittsburgh at Chicago Cubs (2:20 PM Eastern)
Pick: 2 stars on Chicago Cubs -130 (risk 200 to win 154)

While the Cubs have lost 10 of their last 12, Pittsburgh is the perfect team against which to get healthy. The Pirates are 20-51 on the road scoring 3.8 runs per game. They start Shawn Chacon who is 1-3 with an 8.55 ERA vs. the Cubs. He has a 1-3 road record with an 8.26 ERA. Sean Marshall has been a bit better for Chicago posting a 4.36 home ERA. He's a lefty and Pittsburgh is 10-34 vs. lefties this season. You say maybe Chacon will perform well against the lowly Cubs who can't score? Think again. Chacon is 4-24 on the road vs. teams scoring 4.3 or fewer runs per game. Home teams hitting .255 to .269 versus a poor starting pitcher (ERA 5.70+) are 37-6 (86%) during September over the last 5 seasons. Cubbies for a small price.

Game: Washington at Colorado (2:20 PM Eastern)
Pick: 2 stars on Colorado -131 (risk 200 to win 153)

The Rockies have pretty much played themselves out of playoff contention with their recent play. They have to win here to have any shot and I like their chances with Aaron Cook on the mound. Cook has a 3.93 home ERA. Colorado is 15-3 this season after having lost 3 of their last 4 as they tend not to go on big long losing streaks. Even during thee last 17 games, of which they lost 14, they only lost more than 3 in a row once. The Rockies are 35-32 at home while Washington is 25-45 on the road. I like Colorado at home in this one.

Pass It On
How much to bet? I recommend 1% of your bankroll for every star. A one-star pick = 1% of bankroll. A five-star pick = 5% of bankroll. It is strongly recommended that you never bet more than 5% of your bankroll on any given game! Remember, there are no such thing as locks. Never bet over your head and you'll live to see another day. Approach your bets as an investment that grows steadily over the long-term. For more, see my write-up on Bankroll Management.
