Baseball Betting Pick - September 02, 2008We nailed our lone MLB runline pick yesterday on the Rockies, good for +2.4 units. Over the last two weeks our MLB picks are hitting 61% (23-15) for +19.3 units. Today we feature four picks. ![]() Today's MLB Baseball Picks: Glen Perkins owns an awesome 12-3 record but his ERA isn't what you might expect with that kind of record (it is 4.00). The fact is, he's pitching has been average but he's been getting lots of run support. The Blue Jays are not a high scoring team by any means, but they can certainly score a few against Perkins at home. Backing up Perkins is a bullpen with a 5.68 road ERA. David Purcey has a 5.53 ERA and he'll be facing a Minnesota team that averages 5.4 runs per game vs. left handed pitchers. This season the Twins are 39-27 OVER on the road including 31-19 OVER to a total of 8.5 to 10. Perkins is 88-1 OVER as a favorite this season. We'll back the OVER here. Game: New York Yankees at Tampa Bay (7:10 PM Eastern) Pick: 3 units on Tampa Bay -1.5 runs +164 (runline) (risk 3 to win 4.9) The Rays have proven themselves night in, night out. If they are not the best team in the AL, they are in the argument. When they have been at home the record speaks for itself, as they are 52-19 on the season. Throw in facing a right-handed pitcher and they are 60-32 on the season. Add in the fact they are on a five-game winning streak for good measure and they become a play here. Not to mention that a good hitting team, has now scored 10+ runs in three straight and are on fire. The Rays are an unbelievable 35-6 at home in their last 41 against RHP. Mike Mussina has had a great year for the Yankees, but here is the laundry list of pitchers having equal or better seasons that have fallen at Tampa this year: Ervin Santana twice, Galarraga and Halladay twice, Burnett, Matsuzaka, Zambrano, Dempster, Wang and Beckett. Enough said, Rays on the runline. Game: Pittsburgh at Cincinnati (7:10 PM Eastern) Pick: 3 units on Cincinnati -1.5 runs +139 (runline) (risk 3 to win 4.2) The Pittsburgh Pirates had a fire sale and dealt their top two hitters in Nady and Bay, as well as their top reliever in Marte. The result has been very unkind to the win column. The Pirates have now dropped 10 in a row and are 2-14 over their last 16. The Pirates have been outscored by 80-28 in the 10-game losing streak - not even competitive, dropping games by over five runs a game. Ian Snell is not the answer as the Pirates are just 5-12 in his last 17 starts. In Snell's last 13 losses they have all been by two runs or more. We will back the Reds on the runline here. Game: Philadelphia at Washington (7:10 PM Eastern) Pick: 2 units on Washington +180 (moneyline) (risk 2 to win 3.6) The Nats are so typical of a young impressionable team. They start losing and the confidence goes down the toilet. That is witnessed by losing streaks of six, nine and 12 games as well as four in a row three times. The upside is that it breeds the same confidence when they start winning. The Nats have had stretches of 3-0, 6-1, 6-1, and finally their current hot streak of seven straight and nine of 11 - their best run of the season. The Phillies have dropped four of six, and now struggling some at the plate. John Lannon has been the best and most consistent pitcher the Nats can throw out there. His ERA has been in the 3's since May 2, and 15 of those 20 starts have resulted in three runs or less. Cole Hammels has pitched great for the Phillies, but it has not shown up in the win column as the Phil's are just 8-9 in his last 17 starts, and 3-5 on the road. The hot Nats getting a bigger line than the way they are playing, so we'll grab the value here. Results: 1-3 ![]() MLB Baseball Picks Resources:
