Mlb Predictions - October 08, 2009Yessterday was not the way we had hoped to start the MLB playoffs, missing on all three plays. Today, we move on and look to gain some ground with six premium plays including a 4-unit pick.
![]() Today's MLB Baseball Picks: The Phillies took a 1-0 series lead with a complete game performance by Cliff Lee, and will go woith Cole Hamels in game two. The Phillies lefthander was named the MVP of the NL Championship Series, as well as the World Series. Hamels is obviously no stranger to the postseason, and last year deleivered a 4-0 record with a 1.80 ERA. Rockies' starter Aaron Cook is recently off of shoulder problems, and he has not been able to stand up to the test of the potent Philly's lineup. Cook stands in at a paltry 1-5 against the Philys over his career with a king size 6.02 ERA. Phillies lefthand hitters Rollins, Howard, and Utley all have .350+ career averages against Cook. The Phillies are creating a homefield monster as they have now won eight straight post-season games here, and I look for them to get the win in this one.Game: Colorado at Philadelphia (2:35 PM Eastern) Pick: 3 units on Philadelphia -1.5 runs +130 (runline) (risk 3 to win 3.9) There are a lot of positives going here for this one. Aaron Cook has not pitched much because of shoulder problems, and he has been lit-up by the Phillies to the tune of a 1-5 career mark built on a 6+ ERA over his career. Philly lefties: Howard, Utley, and Rollins have tagged him at over a .350+ clip each. Hamels has the postseason pedigree at 4-0 and 1.8 ERA, as well as the Philly's dominating at home winning their last eight postseason games here. It all says take the Phillies on the runline.Game: St. Louis at Los Angeles Dodgers (6:05 PM Eastern) Pick: 3 units on Los Angeles Dodgers +100 (moneyline) (risk 3 to win 3) The Dodgers struggled down the stretch, emerged to be what they were before - a tough team, and we have seen this before. The Dodgers pounded out 12 hits in this one chasing Carpenter in five innings. Clayton Kerswaw is no slouch either, particularly vs. the Cardinals as he has better numbers than Wainwright does vs. the Dodgers. Kershaw, in four career starts against St. Louis, has a 1.82 ERA. The Dodgers are getting it done at home when they face the top teams as they have turned in a 30-14 mark against winning teams, and are also 6-1 in their last seven agaisnt righthanders, and 13-3 in game two of a series. The Dodgers get the nod here.Game: St. Louis at Los Angeles Dodgers (6:05 PM Eastern) Pick: 4 units on Los Angeles Dodgers +1.5 runs -170 (runline) (risk 4 to win 2.4) The Dodgers have now won their last four divisional playoff games, and saw their bats reach one of the top pitchers and bullpen in baseball for 12 hits, while their bullpen threw 5.1 scoreless innings. They have been tough at home when they need to be, sporting a 30-14 mark against an opposing a team with a winning record. Kershaw has held this Cardinals' lineup in check with a 1.82 ERA in four starts. The strategy the same - build the pitch count on Wainwright, get into the Cards' pen and win the game. I'll grab the Dodgers here on the runline.Game: Boston at Los Angeles Angels (9:30 PM Eastern) Pick: 3 units on Boston -110 (moneyline) (risk 3 to win 2.7) The Red Sox have certainly owned the Angels in the postseason, and I'm sure they are in their heads. You know how much confidence the Sox must have in Lester, to push Beckett to game two, despite his postseason mastery. The fact is that Lester is a better pitcher right now and the Angels have to go with Lackey who has simply not had a great season off of injuries. All you have to do is to look at the fact that the Red Sox are 40-17 in Lester's last 57 starts, which includes 24-9 against a team with a winning record. The Angels have hit the skids come money time as they are a horrific 1-10 in their last 11 postseason games, inmcljuding 0-6 at home. Overall, the Angels are just 2-7 in Lackey's last nine home starts against a team with a winning record. We have a very undervalued Red Sox team here behind Lester, so Boston gets the call.Game: Boston at Los Angeles Angels (9:35 PM Eastern) Pick: 3 units on Boston -1.5 runs +150 (runline) (risk 3 to win 4.5) What is not to like about playing the runline on a team that is 40-17 with Lester on the mound? The Sawx are playing against a team that they truly have owned and gotten inside their heads. The Angels have not performed well at all in the postseason dropping 10 of their last 11, and six straight at home. Then when you add in a starter that has been reduced by injuries and is just 2-7 in his last nine home starts against a winning team, you have all the makings of a runline play and Boston is it, on the runline. Results: 2-4 ![]() MLB Baseball Picks Resources:
