Premium Picks

Game: Oakland at Minnesota (1:05 PM Eastern)
Pick: 2 stars on Minnesota -191 (risk 200 to win 105)

Minnesota at home with Johan Santana? It's just not fair. This team was 54-27 here during the regular season and they showed resolve late in the season to earn this spot. Santana was 12-0 here with a 2.19 ERA. Sure Barry Zito is good but he's no match for Johan. Zito is 5-4 vs. the Twins while Santana is 4-1 vs. Oakland. The Twins beat good teams. They are 21-10 this season vs. teams at 54%+ and with Santana on the mound, they are 17-3 in late season play vs. such teams over the past three seasons. With Santana throwing they are 22-3 in late season play vs. teams batting .265 or worse. The postseason is much about pitching but Oakland's lack of bats is going to catch up with them. In pitching duels, gotta like the Twins as they are 23-5 at home when the total is 7.5 or less over the last 2 seasons. Twinkies here.

Game: Detroit at New York Yankees (8:05 PM Eastern)
Pick: 2 stars on New York Yankees -223 (risk 200 to win 90)

Yes, another big favorite. But, in the postseason the cream rises to the top and here we have the cream at home. And the cream has been very hot. The Yankees bats are on fire as they come in off a run in which they scored nearly 8 runs per game in their last seven games. Chien-Ming Wang gets the call for New York. He's 11-3 with a 3.03 ERA at home this season. His counterpart, Nate Robertson is just 13-13 on the season and 6-5 on the road. He's 1-4 vs. the Yankees while Wang is 3-0 vs. Detroit. Robertson is 9-23 the past two seasons vs. winning teams in late-season play. Detroit lost five straight to end the season and were swept by the lowly KC Royals. That is a sign of MAJOR problems folks. Yankees too much for Robertson and the reeling Tigers in game one.

How much to bet? I recommend 1% of your bankroll for every star. A one-star pick = 1% of bankroll. A five-star pick = 5% of bankroll. It is strongly recommended that you never bet more than 5% of your bankroll on any given game! Remember, there are no such thing as locks. Never bet over your head and you'll live to see another day. Approach your bets as an investment that grows steadily over the long-term. For more, see my write-up on Bankroll Management.
