Baseball Picks - May 22, 2008
We split our plays yesterday, but nailed our 5-unit pick for a slight gain. Over the last week and a half we are up +31 units and hitting 62% (28-17). Four picks tonight with a 4-unit selection.
Today's MLB Baseball Picks:
Game: Los Angeles Angels at Toronto (7:05 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Los Angeles Angels +112 (moneyline) (risk 3 to win 3.4)
The Angels have taken the first two games in this series, and have now logged three straight in the win column, and at 14-9 have also played good baseball on the road. Ervin Santana is 6-1 with an ERA under three, and the Jays just have not found an offense, nor the magic at home they had last season as they are sub-.500 in their own park this season. Burnett has plus stuff, but still struggles on the mound, as he is closing in on a 5 ERA. Jays have managed three or less runs in more than half of their games, and it may certainly take more than that here. The Angels get the nod for the sweep.
Game: Baltimore at New York Yankees (7:05 PM Eastern)Pick: 3 units on Game Total UNDER 9.5 -120 (risk 3 to win 2.5)
The Yankee offense has been struggling all season. Giambi and Cano have done little, and the absence of Posada has added to the woes. The Yankees offense is even worse against LHP. It has led them to playing UNDER when they face a LHP to the tune of 10-4-1, or better than 70% of the time. Baltimore is not a good hitting team, it’s their pitching has held them together, and Burres especially, as he threw 0's at the Yankees already this season. The Birds have played UNDER in 16 of 24 on the road, so we like this one to go UNDER the total.
Game: Arizona at Florida (7:10 PM Eastern)Pick: 3 units on Florida +124 (moneyline) (risk 3 to win 3.7)
The D-Backs are getting all the ink, running out fast in the West, but the reality is that the Marlins are just 1.5 games off their pace. They became the first to hand Brandon Webb a loss yesterday, and you have to know they will be a confident group tonight. As good as the D-Backs have been they are just 9-10 on the road - so very mediocre. Playing a team that has played on an equal level at home certainly shows lots of value to the home side. The D-Backs are just 5-5 in Dan Haren's starts and have yet to win one on the road with him on the mound. Justin Miller has a winning career record as a starter, and the Marlins find ways to get it done and as a home dog, we have to back them here.
Game: Cleveland at Chicago (8:10 PM Eastern)Pick: 4 units on Chicago +108 (moneyline) (risk 4 to win 4.3)
Talk about value, the White Sox are the hottest team in baseball. The Chi Sox are winners of seven straight while outscoring the opponent by over a two-to-one margin and they are at home as a divisional dog? Mark Buerhle may not have the best numbers, but he is the ace of the Sox staff, and is off an outing in which he gave up just one run. Cleveland has now dropped five straight and the offense has not been seen all season. They have managed 10 straight games without topping four runs, averaging just 2.5 rpg. This one is chock full of value on the home town Chi-Sox.
