Today's MLB Baseball Picks:
Game: Toronto at New York Yankees (1:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Toronto +152 (moneyline) (risk 3 to win 4.6)
The Yankees will open the season with Chien-Ming Wang on the hill, and he will be opposed by Roy Halladay. Halladay has really been difficult to solve for the Yankees, as he is 6-1 in his last seven starts against the Bronx Bombers. The Yankee lineup has produced a total of just 19 runs in these seven games, or 2.7 runs per game. Wang has been the winningest pitcher in baseball over the past two years with 38, but fell apart during the postseason and has pitched poorly all spring, seemingly not recovering. Wang is a notoriously slow starter. The past two seasons, his first four starts of the year have shown him pitch 49.1 innings, allowing 58 hits and 31 earned runs for an ERA of 5.66. The Yankees never get out of the gate hot, as the past four years they have won a minimum of 94 games, but their April ledger shows 44-49, or 47.3%. We like the matchup on the mound, as well as the situational matchup. Jays spoil the last opener at the old stadium.
Game: Tampa Bay at Baltimore (3:05 PM Eastern)Pick: 3 units on Baltimore +117 (moneyline) (risk 3 to win 3.5)
Hard to even think about Tampa Bay as a favorite on the road no matter who they are playing. They have the worst road record over the past five years in baseball. Jamie Shields has pitched well, but the Rays are no better on the road with him on the hill as they are overall. They have a road record of 8-17 when he takes to the rubber on the road. Guthrie managed just seven wins last season, but three of them came at the expense of the Rays. Tampa managed just 20 road wins last season without Kazmir on the mound. We like the O's to win their opener at home.
Game: Texas at Seattle (6:40 PM Eastern)Pick: 3 units on Seattle -1.5 runs +130 (runline) (risk 3 to win 3.9)
Texas certainly hasn't been much on the road, as they had the fewest wins in all of baseball on the road last season with just 28. Kevin Millwood certainly didn't aid that cause as the Rangers did not win a road game started by Millwood after the middle of June. That was nine consecutive starts. Eric Bedard won 12 of his last 13 starts last season for a team that didn't swing the bats very well, yet 10 of those 13 games were won by two runs or more. Amazingly, of Bedard's 13 wins last season every single one of them was by two runs or more. He now has a much more dependable lineup to produce even more runs. With the futility of Millwood and the Rangers on the road combined with the success of Bedard, we will play the runline in this one with the host Mariners.
Results: 1-1
