BetPhoenix 100% Deposit Match! ![]() Today's MLB Baseball Picks: We approach the midway point of the 2009 MLB season, and two things are apparent. The Chicago Cubs aren't the same team we saw last year, and their road struggles have been very troubling, as they enter here with just a 15-24 mark overall. The other is the fact that the Pirates have become a viable team, especially at home where they have logged an impressive 21-15 mark to date. The Cubs have another problem with Ted Lilly on the mound. He has struggled over his last three starts with a 5+ ERA and has allowed 25 hits in just 19 innings, and five of those have left the park! Ross Ohlendorf has been more than a serviceable pitcher for the Pirates as they are now 8-5 in his last 13 starts and better yet, they are 6-1 in his last seven at home. This looks like a very live dog here, and I'm going with the Pirates.Game: Chicago Cubs at Pittsburgh (7:10 PM Eastern) Pick: 4 units on Pittsburgh +1.5 runs -150 (runline) (risk 4 to win 2.7) Someone is not paying attention here, and it is the oddsmakers. Ohlendorf has led the Pirates to a 6-1 mark in his last seven home starts. Against a Cubs team that has just 15 road wins in 39 tries, and four of the 15 came by a single run, so they would of covered -1.5 on the road in just 11 of 39! Those are not the kind of numbers you want to hitch your cart to, especially against an under the radar Pirates team winning 21 of 36 at home, and recently unbeatable at home if given +1.5 runs, as they would be 15-2 in their last 17. I’m going with the Pirates on the runline.Game: Arizona at Cincinnati (7:15 PM Eastern) Pick: 5 units on Cincinnati +130 (moneyline) (risk 5 to win 6.5) Dan Haren has put up some exceptional numbers over his career, and has to be considered a top pitcher in MLB right now. He is 71-57 for his career with an ERA of 3.57. There is a caveat to all of that though, as Haren has never pitched behind a team with a particularly strong offense, and has had to fight and scratch for every win. That is certainly true on the road, where he has pitched his teams to just a 31-28 mark. Right now Arizona is struggling mightily, dropping five straight, eight of nine, and 17 of 24. The Reds are 9-3 in Arroyo's last 12 starts as a dog, and the D-Backs are just 3-13 in their last 16 against right-hand pitching. I’m going with the Reds in this one.Game: Arizona at Cincinnati (7:20 PM Eastern) Pick: 3 units on Cincinnati +1.5 runs -130 (runline) (risk 3 to win 2.3) I mentioned the struggles of the Diamondbacks right now as they have dropped five straight, and eight of nine. I also mentioned Haren's teams mediocre road record at 31-28. When you add in the one-run wins, that record becomes a dismal 21-38 or winning just 35.6% of the time at -1.5 runs. The Reds are surprisingly just three games out in the NL Central, while the D-Backs are just six losses shy of the Nationals. These two teams are heading in opposite directions, and with the D-Backs also 0-5 in their last five in Cincinnati, I'm going with the Reds in this one on the runline. Results: 2-2 ![]() MLB Baseball Picks Resources:
