Can the Rockies sweep the once-hot Yankees? They'll have to go through Roger Clemens to do it. The Yankees offense, after powering through Boston, the White Sox, Pittsburgh, Arizona and the Mets, has stalled against the Rockies. New York averaged 6.9 runs per game in the five series prior to this one but they've gotten just one run in each of the first two games. The slump can't hold forever and with Clemens going today, the Yankees may not need a whole lot of offense.

There is nothing like a win for the Birds this season. They finally broke a nine-game losing streak with a win yesterday. The Birds have been 18-10 this season after a win and will have their best pitcher on the hill today in Eric Bedard. Bedard got off to a bad start, but in his last nine starts has not allowed more than three earned runs in any of them and has pitched to a 2.25 ERA covering 60 innings of work. After scoring just 25 runs in 8 games the Bird’s offense has caught fire plating 13 runs in their last two games. David Wells has shown signs of aging and has not been as good as he has in the past. His ERA is on the cusp of 5, and in the NL with no DH, that is more like 5.5-6 in the AL. The Padres are just 5-8 in his starts and Baltimore has done better against LHP than RHP. Birds win this one.

The Dodgers don't get a lot of offense but they're facing another low-scoring team for the rubber game. The interesting thing is that one team has reeled off huge games in the first two with LA scoring 10 in game one and Toronto putting up 12 in their last game. We were on the Blue Jays yesterday, noting that teams off a double-digit performance are doing very poorly this year in the follow-up game. After putting up a dozen last night, we think Toronto could be flat here. The Jays are in fact 9-21 the past three seasons off a game in which they scored 10+ runs. Shaun Marcum has been very good but so has Chad Billingsley (4-0 with 3.09 ERA). So far at least, he has put his control problems of last season behind him. The Dodgers are a winning team on the road and they own a 77-41 record the past two seasons against losing opponents. We'll go with the dog here.
