Today's MLB Baseball Picks:
Game: Toronto at Chicago White Sox (7:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 5 units on Toronto -125 (risk 5 to win 4)
The Jays staff has been very hot, leading to a 6-2 mark over their last eight games. They have allowed less than two runs a game over these eight games and tonight will bring Roy Halladay to the mound. The Jays are 13-6 when he takes the mound. This is the best combination for the Jays - their ace and their lineup facing a LHP. It is no secret the Jays struggle against RHP, but are built to attack LHP. They are 18-11 on the season against southpaws, putting up 5.5 runs per game (vs. 4.5 against righties). Chicago gets just 4.3-rpg. When Halladay has started against a LHP the Jays are 5-1 this year, 9-3 last year and 4-1 in '05 or 18-5 the last three years. Some notable matchups? He has beaten Bedard twice, Sabathia and Santana twice, Randy Johnson and Buehrle this season already. With Halladay on the mound as a favorite of -100 to -150, the Jays are 16-4 the past two seasons. The Blue Jays own a distinct bullpen advantage here also (3.42 ERA vs. 5.91). Chicago is a losing team, even at home where they own a 23-27 mark. Hot team, hot pitcher and situational variables all come together in this one.
Game: Texas at Kansas City (7:10 PM Eastern)Pick: 3 units on Texas -107 (risk 3 to win 2.8)
Don't look now, but the Rangers are 23-15 over their last 38 games and have played very well. Kevin Millwood is finally pitching up to his capacity, after missing a good stretch on the DL. Millwood has pitched to a 3.05 ERA over his last seven starts, and has not yielded more than four runs in any outing. Considering he allowed 4+ in eight straight prior to this, says a lot to where he is health-wise right now. Odalis Perez has allowed 4+ runs in over half his starts, and has an ERA that has been in the high fives all season long. He has only completed seven innings in three of his 21 starts, exposing a Royal’s pen that is suspect. The Rangers will even the series tonight.
Game: Chicago Cubs at Cincinnati (7:10 PM Eastern)Pick: 4 units on Cincinnati -118 (risk 4 to win 3.4)
We have been on this guy most of the season, and again see some huge value backing him. Aaron Harang has been a difference maker for the Reds when he toes the rubber. The Reds are now 17-5 (77.2%), when Harang takes his turn in the rotation, and winners of nine straight. The Reds are also 28-54 (34.1%) when he doesn't get the ball. The 43.1% change in winning percentage is the highest in MLB. The Reds have been a hot team, as they have won 4-of-5 on this home stand, and have now gone 8-1 in their last nine home games, eight of which have been against .500+ teams. The Cubs were hot for a longtime, and now have dropped two in a row, and 4-of-6. The offense has managed just three runs a game over the last week. We ride Harang once again, especially at basically even odds at home, where the Reds have been beating everyone.
