Baseball Pick - July 27, 2007

After racking up a lot of units the past few days, we gave back six of them yesterday as we went a dissapointing 1-2. Today we come back with three picks.

Today's MLB Baseball Picks:

Game: Minnesota at Cleveland (7:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Minnesota +125 (risk 3 to win 3.8)

Are we crazy backing Minnesota here? They are on a down streak having lost seven of nine games. But, hang on - three of those losses came to Detroit in Detroit. All three were one-run losses. They then won their series against the Angles. The last series, against Toronto was an absolute disaster for sure. But Minnesota isn't as bad as it initially looks. They are only three wins away from a .500 road record and they are a winning team vs. right-handed pitchers. They have had an extra day here to recoup and rest for this game. Cleveland has had their own struggles of late. They have lost four of six. In their last four games they have managed just 20 total hits. While Paul Byrd has a better record than Boof Bonser, Bonser has the better numbers. His overall ERA is better and his road ERA (4.63) is better than Byrd's home ERA (5.67). Bonser is coming off a couple of gems vs. Oakland and the Angels (14 innings with 7 SO and 3 BB and 5 runs). Minnesota's offense can keep up with Cleveland's. We think Minnesota, coming off a terrible series and four straight losses and in need of a win will come in rested and focused. Cleveland is also coming in off a crushing loss to Boston. They were out-hit 17-6. The Tribe is just 4-14 in their last eighteen games at home following a defeat in which they were out-hit by double digits. They are also just 17-25 overall at home in July the past three seasons. Minnesota is 34-25 vs. teams at 54%+ the past two seasons. Cleveland appears to be in the middle of a nice July slump and we'll fade them here.

Game: Boston at Tampa Bay (7:10 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Boston -149 (risk 3 to win 2)

The Red Sox have gotten through their bad stretch and appear to be destined to run off a streak of good baseball. It started with three straight wins vs. the White Sox and continued as they took three of four from Cleveland on the road. Tim Wakefield has owned Tampa Bay as he is 16-2 in his career vs. the D-Rays! Jason Hammel has been converted to a starter and went only 4 innings in his only other start. He has not built the arm strength to go long which means the D-Ray pen will be exposed for a long duration in this one. The Rays are just 5-23 in their last 28 games and have played about as bad as it gets. We look for the Sox to take the opener tonight.

Game: Oakland at Seattle (10:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Oakland +159 (risk 3 to win 4.8)

Wow. Seattle went from the hottest team in the league to the coldest. They had an amazing run from late May to mid July. But, they have proceeded to rattle off seven losses in a row. They face rookie Dallas Braden here which is why they are instilled as large favorites. But, Braden has given no cause for concern so far. He's got a solid 5.15 ERA and has shown signs of steady improvement. Three games ago he gave up 5 runs in 5.3 innings to Kansas City. Felix Hernandez has gone the opposite direction, starting out solid and stumbling of late (25 hits allowed and 9 BB in his last three starts in 18.3 innings). Then he gave up 4 runs in 6 innings to Texas and last game he yielded just one run in 7 innings pitched vs. Baltimore. Oakland's offense has picked up of late and they have hit better on the road than at home all season. They are just two wins under .500 away from home. The A's have won games at +120 and +170 within the past week and they are 21-13 in July games the past three seasons. They are also 13-9 overall this season as an underdog of +125 to +175 and they have a winning record the past two seasons as an underdog of +150 or more! So, this team definitely has a shot here and given how cold Seattle is, we'll take the big dog.

Results: 1-2
