What can you say about Aaron Harang? He pitches on a bad team, yet when he toes the rubber, the Reds are 15-5! They are 24-50 in all other games. The Reds have won 10 of his last 12 road starts and now they are even hot as a team, winning the first two games here and going 7-3 in their last 10. John Smoltz is always capable of pitching a good game, but the Braves are just 2-4 in his last six starts. If it comes down to the pen - Cincinnati is hot. The pen has allowed just four runs in their last 18 innings of work while the Braves’ pen has yielded 10 runs in their last 15 innings. Lots of value here.

It has been over three weeks since the Cubs have lost two in a row, and even longer since they have lost two in a row at home. Carlos Zambrano has become what he was expected to be at the beginning of the season, and suddenly leads the NL in wins with 11. His last eight starts have been about as dominating as it gets. He has worked 58 innings and allowed just 28 hits with opponents hitting just .158. His ERA has been 1.55, and he has struck-out 63. Zambrano adds yet another dimension when he pitches. He is hitting .267 with 2 HR's, so it is like having a DH for the Cubs. The Giants are dependant on Barry Bonds to supply the power, but Bonds has just three hits in the month of July. The Giants were 24-22 in late May, and have really fallen, going 15-30 in their last 45. The Cubs have been torrid, winning 24 of 36, and with Zambrano on the hill they take the series.

The Oakland A's have quickly played themselves out of playoff contention. They have now dropped nine straight and are just 5-18 in their last 23 games. The offense has been brutal, producing more than three runs in just six of those 23 games. The latest nine game slide has seen them produce just 20 runs, and at the same time, the pitching has allowed 52, or almost six runs a game. Lenny DiNardo did great out of the pen, but he has seen his ERA more than double out of the pen, and the A's are just 1-5 in his last six starts. Don't look now but the Rangers are now 18-10 in their last 28 games and have become a different team, with the emergence of the back of the pen and today's starter Kevin Millwood finally healthy. Millwood has delivered five straight starts allowing three runs or less, and has allowed just four runs combined in his last three. Wrong team favored.
