Sports Handicapping Free Mlb Picks - August 31, 2007

We went 1-2 yesterday losing 2.7 units. Today we have four picks...

Today's MLB Baseball Picks:

Game: Tampa Bay at New York Yankees (7:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 2 units on Tampa Bay +225 (risk 2 to win 4.5)
Pick: 4 units on Game Total OVER 10.5 -110 (risk 4 to win 3.6)

The Yankees are a very powerful team at home, and have been scoring runs in big chunks, especially vs. mediocre pitching. There is also a history of this team playing some slugfests after the hated Red Sox leave town. The Yankees in their first game after the Red Sox come to town have seen their games average 13.5 runs in the last four years. In addition, the Yankees, and the Stadium, seem to bring out the best in the D-Ray hitters, as the last three series they have come here and and in nine games have totaled an amazing 140 runs (15.6 per game). The D-Rays line-up is also clicking on all cylinders right now, as they have scored 65 runs in their last seven games, good for 9.3 per game. We look for a lot of runs to be scored in this one, and we will play the OVER. The Yankees have also had a "Red Sox hangover" as it relates to winning. The mighty Yankees have recently gone just 18-25 in the first game played after the Red Sox series, good for -25.3 units to their backers. Everyone remembers the Boston Masacre last season when the Yankees swept the Sox five straight. They went on to lose their next game and 4 of their next 5! The last 12 times these teams have met, the Yankees have gone 3-9. New York has also lost to some very bad teams along the way, as their mark when installed as a favorite of -200 or more stands at 3-7! Two of those seven losses were -320 and -370. The 3-7 record puts them at -16 units when favored by -200+. The Rays offense has been hot, and they have now won three in a row and six of seven. We will run with the circumstantial value on this one.

Game: San Francisco at Washington (7:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 4 units on San Francisco +104 (risk 4 to win 4.2)

The Giants have played their best baseball of the season of late as they have now won 11 of their last 14. They may have found something in the process. Kevin Correia has been a steady fixture in the pen, and pitched to an ERA in the 3's each of the past two seasons. The Giants, out of necessity, have used him as a starter, and he has performed great. He has worked 10 innings in two starts, yielding just 2 earned runs and last outing they stretched him out to 5.3 innings. The Nationals have really cooled off, and have now dropped six straight games. They will hand the ball to Tim Redding, who only lasted 4 innings in his last start against Colorado, where he was pounded for 5 runs. Redding has had location issues of late, as he has now walked 11 in his last 17 innings of work, and served up two long balls in his last outing. Have to like the way the Giants have been playing of late, and hard to ride a Nats team that has returned to their losing ways after a nice run.

Game: Cincinnati at St. Louis (8:10 PM Eastern)
Pick: 4 units on Cincinnati +130 (risk 4 to win 5.2)

What's going on here? Anthony Reyes is favored? The guy is 2-13 this season. The Reds are 3-15 with him on the mound. And he's the favorite? He hasn't been that awful (5.33 ERA) but he doesn't win games. He's 2-12 the past two seasons as a favorite of -125 to -175. In contrast, the Reds have been winning. They have won eight of their last ten. They are averaging 6.5 runs per game over that span. The Cards have lost four of seven overall, averaging less than half of that (3.1 runs per game). Take the Reds and the line value here.

Results: 2-2
