Baseball Predictions - August 30, 2008

Overall we finished 5-1 yesterday including a 2-0 day on the bases for a +4.9 unit gain. We also finished the NFL preseason hitting 61% and we've started off in college football going 3-1.

Over the last week and a half our MLB picks are +16.7 units hitting 61% (19-12). Three plays today.

Today's MLB Baseball Picks:

Game: Baltimore at Tampa Bay (3:55 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Tampa Bay -184 (moneyline) (risk 3 to win 1.6)

The Rays have put an end to any thoughts of their demise this late in the season - this is just flat out a good team. The Rays are 50-19 at home and 60-32 against right-handed pitching overall. The Rays are winning at a rate at home much greater than the odds posted here, and have the pitching advantage in this one as well. Chris Waters made a successful debut for the O's, but since has made four starts pitching to a sub-par 6.53 ERA. He will be no match for the potent D-Rays in this one. Tampa Bay gets the call.

The Indians are the hottest tem in baseball right now as they are now 16-4 over their last 20 games. The Mariners are a horrible team they have not won two in a row on the road since beating the Padres way back in late June, and haven't won two in a row over an American League team since mid April! Jared Washburn has been awful and has pitched to a 6.23 ERA over his last three starts - certainly not the recipe to stop a hot team. Anthony Reyes has been masterful for the Indians, especially of lately. Reyes has produced a 2.50 ERA over his last three starts and has not allowed more than two runs in his four starts. The Indians should make this an easy one, and we will back them on the runline.

The Red Sox have beaten up on some teams at home this season, but not recently. They have lost seven of their last nine at Fenway to teams with a winning record. The White Sox are in a dogfight with Minnesota in the Central, holding just a half game lead. They send Mark Buehrle to the mound who has finally begun to pitch as expected and they have now won his last four starts. The Red Sox will use Michael Bowden to make his first major league start. Bowden dominated at AA but was less successful at AAA Pawtucket with a 4.15 ERA. We like the White Sox as a live dog here.
