Today's MLB Baseball Picks:
Game: Detroit at Kansas City (2:10 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Kansas City +141 (risk 3 to win 4.2)
The Tigers were sailing along with a 57-36 record and appeared poised to duplicate what they did last season. Then the wheels fell off. Over the last quarter of the season the Tigers have been one of the worst teams in baseball, posting a 14-26 record (.350)! For the answer, just look at their hurlers. The pitching has been the worst in baseball over this stretch, and yes, that includes worse than Tampa Bay! The Tigers staff has allowed 249 runs in their last 40 games good for 6.2 runs per game (RPG) for the opponent. Jeremy Bonderman has been struggling to say the least. Bonderman was 10-1 on July 13, but hasn't sniffed a win since and it is easy to see why. He has worked 47.2 innings, allowed 65 hits and 43 runs, on way to an ERA of 8.12 and a 0-6 mark. The Royals have been under the radar all season. They are assumed to be the doormat in the AL Central, but a look at their last half of a season. Covering 70 games, they are 37-33! They are also 21-14 (.600) in their last 35 at home. Leo Nunez has bolstered the staff with his call-up after the break. He has pitched the Royals to four wins in his five starts, and with an ERA of three, has been providing quality starts. Everyone remembers the Royals going to Detroit for the final series of the season and sweeping the Tigers. They have now won four of the last five played this year, and no reason to think things change today. We'll ride KC again tonight.
Game: Cincinnati at Pittsburgh (7:05 PM Eastern)Pick: 3 units on Cincinnati +110 (risk 3 to win 3.3)
Both of these clubs have been on a bit of a roll. Cincinnati has won seven of nine as Harang did it again last night. The Pirates have won nine of twelve. Tonight Matt Morris faces Matt Belisle. Morris has pitched a couple of nice games in a row coming into this one allowing just 3 runs in his last two starts. But, his team doesn't help him out a lot as he is just 8-8 on the year and 3-3 at home. He's just 17-28 the past three seasons in post-All Star play and 5-13 over that span at home vs. division opponents. Belisle, on the other hand, benefits from Cincinnati's offensive firepower. He's 5-1 on the road and he owns a 3-0 career mark with a 1.67 ERA vs. Pittsburgh. The Reds, a 61-72 club overall, like facing RHP. With one more win they are a .500 team vs. righties. They score 5.1 per game vs. RHP and right now they are taggin the ball (6.9 per game over their last seven). Pittsburgh doesn't have the offense to stick with Cincinnati and certainly not right now. The Reds have notched 10+ hits in eleven of their last thirteen games! We'll ride this offense.
Game: Milwaukee at Chicago Cubs (8:05 PM Eastern)Pick: 3 units on Milwaukee +156 (risk 3 to win 4.7)
Milwaukee had a comfortable division lead (8.5 games) back on June 23. Since then they have let Chicago take the lead into it by posting a 23-35 record. THey won on Wednesday to snap a five game skid. This is a very important game for them and we think they ride the momentum from yesterday to a win here. Yes, they throw a rookie on the mound. But we like Parra's chances. In his first appearance he went six innings allowing just one earned run on six hits. He's facing Ted Lilly who has been awful of late. In his last three starts, he has gone just 17 innings and allowed 13 earned runs. And the best part is that Lilly is a southpaw. Milwaukee eats up LHP. They score about 4.5 per game vs. RHP but put up 5.4 per game vs. lefties. While they are just 41-46 for -9.6 units vs. RHP, they are 25-20 for +2.4 units vs. left-handers. This team, in a critical game, is going to step it up tonight to lift up the rookie. The Cubs are just 15-16 this season as a favorite of -150 or more so this is a very losable game for them.
Results: 1-2
