Free Mlb Pick - August 26, 2007
Passed yesterday. Today we come back with a pair of 4-unit, early-afternoon plays.
Today's MLB Baseball Picks:
Game: San Diego at Philadelphia (1:30 PM Eastern)
Pick: 4 units on San Diego +142 (risk 4 to win 5.7)
The Phillies got a lift from Kyle Kendrick when he was called up from AAA. They won five of his first six starts, but have since dropped three of four. Lately he has been prone to the long ball, allowing four HRs in his last three starts, which have been his undoing. The Phillies have gone stone cold. They have dropped six of seven, and four straight, having produced just 10 runs in the four-game losing streak. San Diego has now won five of six, and have been red-hot, producing 45 runs in those six games, or 7.5-runs per game (RPG). The Padres have called up Tim Stauffer to start today, and his call-up is very timely. Stauffer has pitched so-so with an 8-4 record and just a 4.40 ERA. He has finally put it all together. Stauffer is 5-0 in his last six starts, allowing just 35 hits, in 48 innings, with an ERA of 1.88. His last two starts have resulted in shutouts. We'll ride the live dog in this one.
Game: Pittsburgh at Houston (2:00 PM Eastern)Pick: 4 units on Pittsburgh +153 (risk 4 to win 6.1)
Don't look now, but the hottest team in baseball is the Pirates. The Pirates have won four straight, and seven of eight, and are about to have their first winning month in years. It has been a total team effort. The Pirates are swinging the bats, getting great starting pitching, and the bullpen has finished it off. They have out-scored the opponent 28-7 in this four-game winning streak. Houston is in a skid, and has now lost six of seven, and three in a row. The last seven games they have been doubled up, getting out-scored 2-1, as they have allowed 44 and scored just 22. The Astros were a .500 team in mid-May, and were 5-3 when Wandy Rodriguez took the mound. They have since gone 37-53, and 6-11 in his starts. They have lost four of his last five, and the bullpen alone has yielded 18 runs in those four games. Not exactly a formula for winning. Tony Armas has struggled, but there is one area where he has struggled. He is 4-0 in his last four starts against teams under .500, and none of those teams have scored more than three runs in the game. Pirates make it five in a row.
