Mlb Free Picks - August 14, 2009

We nailed our 5-unit selection last night on Florida on the moneyline, to anchor another 2-0 sweep, good for +7.2 units! Last night's winner added to our massive two-month MLB run as we are hitting 61% (149-97) for a whopping +139.2 units. On the season, we've now more than doubled season-subscriber's starting bankroll (based on 1% of bankroll risked per unit).

Today, we are on the dusty diamond with a four spot, including two 4-unit selections.

Today's MLB Baseball Picks:

Game: San Diego at St. Louis (8:10 PM Eastern)
Pick: 4 units on St. Louis -225 (moneyline) (risk 4 to win 1.8)

The Cardinals have now had two aces at the top of their staff, with the return of Chris Carpenter and the emergence of Adam Wainwright. Wainwright has really turned into a No. 1 type starter. He has progressively gotten better as the season has gone on, and he has been as dependable and as steady as a rock. Wainwright has now gone through nine turns of the rotation, and has not allowed anyone to score more than two runs against him, and has put together a microscopic ERA of 1.48 in the process. The Padres are horrible on the road, and their last 37 against a team with a winning record shows them at 11-40, or winning just better than one of every four games. The Cards are now 37-16 in Wainwright's last 53 starts on grass. I’m going with the Cards in this one.
Game: San Diego at St. Louis (8:15 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on St. Louis -1.5 runs -105 (runline) (risk 3 to win 2.9)
There are a lot of reasons why the runline makes sense here. The biggest being the fact that the Padres are a miserable road team. And when they face good competition on the road, those bad numbers become dreadful. The Padres are just 11-40 in their last 51 road games against a winning team, so at even odds on the runline sure makes a lot of sense. When you look at what Adam Wainwright has been doing, allowing two or less runs in nine straight starts, and facing a light-hitting road team like the Padres, the ingredients are all there. I'll go with the Cards on the runline.
Game: Chicago White Sox at Oakland (10:05 PM Eastern)
Pick: 4 units on Oakland -150 (moneyline) (risk 4 to win 2.7)
When you look at the White Sox, they have to be concerned by what they haven't seen from Jose Contreras. Every once in awhile, he pitches a gem, so he seduces them into thinking he is what he once was, which has become apparent that he isn't. Contreras has pitched his teams to just a 32-52 record in his last 84 starts and on the road, he is just 12-21. He has been brutal on the road over the last three years as his best road effort in the three-year span has been 5.13, certainly not the quality he once displayed. Brett Anderson is quickly blossoming into a top of the rotation for the A's. After the A's went 0-6 in his first six starts, with his ERA over six as well, Anderson has taken charge. His last nine starts show the A's at 8-1 while his ERA is at 2.90. That’s good enough for me to play the A's in this one.
Game: Chicago White Sox at Oakland (10:10 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Oakland -1.5 runs +130 (runline) (risk 3 to win 3.9)
The White Sox have a serious dilemma with Jose Contreras. They see him throw a good game once in awhile and begin to believe that he has found it, but his reality is a 32-52 team record in his last 84 starts and even worse on the road. He has not pitched to an ERA under five on the road for three years, and now the A's bring their developing ace to the mound that has led them to an 8-1 mark backed by a 2.90 ERA. As a team, the A’s haven’t been overpowering of late, they have won the big chalk games, going 99-38 as a favorite of -151 to -200. I will back the A's on the runline here.

Results: 2-2
