Premium Picks

Game: Detroit at Tampa Bay (7:15 PM Eastern)
Pick: 2 stars on Detroit -174 (risk 200 to win 115)

Detroit has already won more games this year than last. With a victory here, they will amass more road victories than they have since 1993. And we still have two more months of play to go. They should get it with ease as Nate Robertson brings his road record of 5-2 and 3.82 ERA into this one. The Tigers are 11-1 this season with Robertson pitching vs. teams scoring 4.7 or fewer runs per game. Facing him is Jae Seo who has a 1-4 home record and 5.14 ERA. Over his last three starts, Seo has posted a 9.91 ERA. Backing him up is a bullpen with a 6.55 home ERA. Detroit's bullpen has a 3.49 road ERA and the Tigers are scoring 5.6 runs per game on the road (vs. just 5.0 at home). This is why they are 39-18 on the road and 45-16 this season vs. losing teams. They are also 38-13 vs. teams with bullpen ERAs of 4.50 or worse and 20-3 as a road favorite of -125 or higher. Detroit here.

Game: Philadelphia at St. Louis (8:10 PM Eastern)
Pick: 2 stars on Philadelphia +115 (risk 200 to win 230)

What's up with the Cards? They have lost six straight and face their second straight series sweep tonight against losing teams. I think they do lose again here. Jason Marquis is a shell of his old self this year. He's got a 5.67 ERA (6.02 at home) and over his last three starts he's allowed 18 runs in just 16.7 innings. He's also just 6-16 during August lifetime. The Cards are allowing over 6 runs per game during their losing streak. Over that same span, Philly is scoring 8.0 runs per game thanks in part to Chase Utley. He kept his hitting streak alive yesterday pushing it to 34 games, during which he's hitting .401. The Phillies are now 19-8 vs. teams at 54%+ in late season play over hte past three seasons. Cole Hamels goes for Philadelphia. He's got average overall stats but he strikes out a lot of batters (5.8 per game). Not good for St. Louis as they are 1-12 on the season vs. starting pitchers that strike out 5 or more batters per start! Philly for the sweep.

How much to bet? I recommend 1% of your bankroll for every star. A one-star pick = 1% of bankroll. A five-star pick = 5% of bankroll. It is strongly recommended that you never bet more than 5% of your bankroll on any given game! Remember, there are no such thing as locks. Never bet over your head and you'll live to see another day. Approach your bets as an investment that grows steadily over the long-term. For more, see my write-up on Bankroll Management.
