Game: Washington at Pittsburgh (7:05 PM Eastern)

Washington is 32-71 overall and 12-38 on the road. And we get to fade them at even money? I'll take that all day long. It's not as if we are backing an equally bad team here. The Pirates are also weak on the road, but at home they are 27-19! Their starter today, Virgil Vasquez, has struggled in three road games but at home he's posted a 3.38 ERA. Yes, Pittsburgh's offense has struggled of late while Washington has been scoring. But, the fact remains that Pittsburgh is the better team with plenty of offense to get it done here. Over the past two seasons, the Nats are just 15-31 when favored at -100 to -150. This season they are 17-31 at -125 to +125 and 20-50 after a loss. Should Washington be a road favorite? No way. I'll take the Pirates.

After underperforming expectations for most of the season, the Mets are showing signs of improvement. Yes, they have dropped two straight, but prior to that they had put together their best run of the season by winning five in a row. They've averaged 5.7 runs per game over their last seven games while holding opponents to 2.3. Tonight, Oliver Perez takes the mound and he's 2-1 at home this season. He's facing a hot Max Scherzer and thanks to this matchup, the D-Backs are favored on the road here. But, a good starting pitching matchup does not guarantee a win. The fact remains that despite a very solid overall ERA of 3.61, Scherzer is just 6-6 on the season. In his road starts, he's put up a 2.70 ERA but he has a losing record! Why? His bullpen is average at best and he gets no run support. The Diamondbacks average only 4.1 runs per game on the road and 3.7 per game against LHP as they are facing today. Arizona has won back-to-back by a combined score of 7-2 but they aren't likely to sustain that kind of play. In fact they are 1-9 this year after holding opponents to two or fewer runs in back-to-back games. They are also just 17-22 this season as a small favorite of -100 to -150. I like the Mets at home in this one.

The D-Backs are not going to get a lot of offense tonight considering their 4.1 runs per game average on the road and 3.7 per game average against southpaws. To expect this team to win on the road in a blowout is simply asking too much. They have an advantage on the mound to start the game but New York has better offense and a better bullpen (3.16 home ERA). Following a win this season, Arizona is 17-27 against the run line. When facing a hot bullpen, they are 6-21 against the run line. Max Scherzer is just 3-10 the past two seasons against the run line. Give me +1.5 on the Mets here.

Yes, Joe Saunders has had a rough go of it recently as he has given up 14 earned runs in his last three starts. But prior to that he was performing respectably. Antyhony Swarzak has been great. He's got a 3.74 overall ERA and has done even better of late, allowing just seven runs in his last 18 innings. Both of these bullpens are respectable. Los Angeles has been pounding the ball of late which is the main reason for this high total. But there are two teams playing here and I like this one to go UNDER.
