Horse Racing Tips - December 31, 2010Unlike the Christmas Holiday, the New Year holiday is a big day in thoroughbred racing. We will be publishing newsletters right through the New Year's weekend. Today's edition of our west coast racing newsletter features four races from Santa Anita for selections and analysis. Today's Best Bet is: #2 TapTapI'mGone in race #9. West Coast Results: Santa Anita Race #1 Best Bet #3 (Star Presence) $3.60. Santa Anita Race #8 Top Pick #3 (Elegant) $3.60. ![]() Today's Horse Racing Picks: Top pick: #2 (LONG LEGGED LOVELY) - Consistent three-year-old has finished second in her last three starts, all at just under this level and she has a good post and brings excellent early speed to the contest. Home-bred retains Bejarano and is much the horse to beat in this spot. 2nd pick: #4 (Good Friday Gal) - Finished a strong pace-setting second at Hollywood Park Dec. 10 in her first race back off almost a four month layoff. Daughter of "Forest Camp" brings the best early speed to the contest and has an excellent work on the local surface heading into her second start back off the long break. Jockey Pat Valenzuela will have her in this from start to finish. 3rd pick: #7 (Suitable Attire) - Her best race ever came on conventional dirt at Fairplex Sept. 22, when she rallied to take the lead but was out-finished late and ran second. Filly stretches out off an even effort sprinting at Hollywood Dec. 12, and will move back to a real dirt surface for this attempt. Low-profile trainer and rider guarantees a big price. 4th pick: #1 (Pegastorm) - Races second off a claim Nov. 18 and filly showed some good speed last out facing tougher for the new barn in her first back off a two month freshening. Has the rail, drops back into a claimer, and can contend today from her inside post. SANTA ANITA Race #3 at 1:30 PM Pacific Top pick: #8 (CANDY FOR PASEANA) - Recent maiden winner at Turf Paradise did so going wire to wire in his first start back off a nine month layoff and first ever in blinkers. Well-bred runner is brought back quickly for this and his trainer is off to a fast start at this young meet. Good to see Bejarano take the ride and gelding is the horse to beat. 2nd pick: #4 (Dontmesroundwitjin) - Races first off a Mike Mitchell claim (a strong 33% winning angle). Speedy four-year-old has run well on real dirt in the past, and has a pair of sharp local works since he wsa claimed Dec. 1. Win candidate. 3rd pick: #2 (Atticuspomponius) - Once classier runner finished second at this level Dec. 2 at Hollywood Park, in his first start back off a three month break. Race was his initial start off a trainer switch to Ron Ellis and it's good to see this long-winded runner come back quickly for this attempt. He should have little trouble handling this 9 furlong distance. Rare Montana-bred will need to step it up to challenge the top pair. 4th pick: #3 (Gobbler's Knob) - Broke slowly last out at this level in his first facing winners, and could only manage to finish a non-threatening fourth. Race was his first off a two month break, and he'll run on real dirt for the first time in over two years this afternoon. Think he'll run well at a nice price. SANTA ANITA Race #6 at 3:00 PM Pacific Top pick: #7 (BLAZING ALONG) - Expensive filly was sent to Saratoga this past summer, but had a very troubled trip and after an failed attempt next out on the Belmont turf, trainer Bob Baffert returned her to the West Coast. Filly is working very fast on this surface for her first race in 70 days and she'll the horse to beat in this spot. 2nd pick: #9 (So Tempted) - Daughter of "Broken Vow" has been well bet in both of her starts and last out at Churchill on the dirt she broke in the air from an outside post and raced evenly once in stride. Home-bred was working fast locally for this and is a win candidate at a nice price. 3rd pick: #2 (Hey Maria) - Well bet in her first pair, filly showed good early speed in each before tiring in both and those two contests had very tough fields. Working fast on this surface for her first start in almost four months, she draws a nice inside post, and should be in this from start to finish. 4th pick: #1 (R Clever Cat) - Home-bred showed some speed in her debut at Hollywood Park in late October and has been freshened up by trainer John Shirreffs since. Filly draws the rail, and should improve second time out. SANTA ANITA Race #9 at 4:30 PM Pacific Top pick: #2 (TAPTAP I'MGONE) - Grey filly by "Tapit" has shown good early speed in all three of her starts and last out was only beaten 3 1/2 lengths facing tougher after she had a wide trip. Trainer Walt Solis drops her back into a claimer, and she faces a field with many inexperienced runners. The top selection. 2nd pick: #1 (Our Little Kitty) - Longshot draws the rail for her first start since Sept. 25 and she was competitive at that time in both her starts on the Fairplex dirt. She has a bullet drill at Hollywood Dec. 5 and presumably with the blinkers on that she'll wear today. Draws the rail and I think she'll run well at a big price. 3rd pick: #10 (Conflicted Traits) - She hasn't shown much in her first two starts, but they came facing much tougher, and showed a hint of speed in both of those contests. Trainer Eric Kruljac will drop her into a claimer and filly has a good chance at a square price. 4th pick: #11 (Irenes Jackpot) - Debuting filly shipped here from Turf Paradise for an excellent barn, and she was working very fast in Arizona before coming here for her first start. 5th pick: #13 (Benicia Beauty) - She had a tough trip in her debut from an inside post and still raced well to finish fourth of 12, beaten just over 4 lengths. She has a nice drill here Dec. 17 and gets a big rider upgrade in this spot to Rafael Bejarano. ![]() Horse Racing Picks Resources:
