Handicapping The Preakness - April 30, 2010We'll be publishing a West Coast newsletter tomorrow on "Derby Day" with four races from Hollywood Park. Today's menu has three races from Hollywood Park and one from Golden Gate Fields. Today's Best Bet is #8 Rahy's Ruler in Race #5 at Golden Gate Fields. West Coast Results : Evangeline Downs Race #3 Exacta (3-8) $43.80. Evangeline Downs Race #4 Top Pick #4 (Tribute to Wolf) $7.20.  Today's Horse Racing Picks: Top pick: #9 (DUKE OF ASPEN ) - Logical selection and the probable favorite drops down another claiming level and this is a new low for him. He draws a tough post but last out finished second from a tough draw facing tougher at Santa Anita. The top pick. 2nd pick: #7 (Steel Blue) - He finished a solid second at this tag Feb. 25 at Santa Anita then was on the shelf for almost two months. He raced evenly in his return going 7 furlongs and is brought back quickly (12 days) and stretched-out in distance today. Win contender. 3rd pick: #3 (B.I.Guy) - Only a 1/2 length off the top pick last out and he has more tactical speed than most entered. He's essentially been racing evenly in most of his starts but is improving. 4th pick: #1 (High Way Sixty Six) - Stretch-out sprinter makes only his second start since August of '08 but he has the best early speed and he draws the rail. Takes them as far as he can. HOLLYWOOD PARK Race #4 at 2:05 PM Pacific Top pick: #9 (MILTY WAY) - Son of "Stephen Got Even" raced evenly on the Santa Anita turf facing special weights and will undergo some changes today. Good barn (Doug O'Neill drops him into a claimer, stretches him out in distancve, and switches surfaces with him. This is his home track and colt has some very nice drills on it. The horse to beat. 2nd pick: #5 (Wells Furgo) - Has dangerous early speed and is in an under-rated barn (Pete Miller). Gelding by "Gone West" is clearly the main danger and I almost put him on top. 3rd pick: #8 (Luv Dragon) - He's raced evenly in both starts but has needed time-off after each. Not a win threat but he could reach the exotics. 4th pick: #1 (Cantona) - Gelding by "Benchmark" has made up ground in his last pair and will try a two-turn contest for the first time. Has the rail and he should be a nice price. GOLDEN GATE FIELDS Race #5 at 2:55 PM Pacific Top pick: #8 (RAHY'S RULER) - Filly is bred for the turf and that's where she'll race today for the first time. Daughter of "Rahy" showed some speed in both her starts sprinting at Santa Anita and will stretch-pot in distance on the infield this sfternoon. Trainer switch to Steve Sherman only adds to the positives. 2nd pick: #6 (Shy Contessa ) - Freshened-up since a solid second-place finish at this level and distance Jan. 8 she would appear to be the main danger in this weak field. 3rd pick: #1 (Glowing Bertie) - Filly by "Bertrando" also stretches-out and tries turf for the first time. She has a hint of speed and an inside post so she'll probably take them as far as she can. 4th pick: #2 (Rising Above) - Erratic type hasn't hit the exacta in 28 tries, but in one of her better efforts last fall she was only a 1 1/2 lengths off "Contessa" on this course. May reach the same race exotics. HOLLYWOOD PARK Race #6 at 3:35 PM Pacific Top pick: #1 (FEED A FEVER) - Filly by "Roaring Fever" drops into a career soft spot a pace-chasing third-place finish facing tougher at Golden Gate on April 11. Her lone win came here last Dec. and she looks very tough in this spot. 2nd pick: #7 (Warren's Ruby ) - Her only win also is local and she has a fine record at this 7 furlong trip (5-1-1-1). Speed stalker raced evenly last out in a starter-allowance on the Santa Anita turf on April 3, her first race since last June. The main danger. 3rd pick: #6 (Saint Cindy) - Deep closer isn't as accomplished as the top pair but could hit the exotics. 4th pick: #5 (Too Pink) - Shortens-up and appears to be nearing a competitive effort.
