Horse Racing Line - September 30, 2008Thought that "Curlin's" connections would "opt" to retire him after he surpassed "Cigar's" money winning record this Past Saturday, but he arrived at Santa Anita yesterday morning. They have remained non-commital as to whatever their plans are, and I'll assume they'll evaluate how he handles the new "Pro-Ride" surface when he works over it. Today as yesterday, we'll go to Delaware and Philly Park for our racing menu. Today's Best Bet is #2 Balrog in Race #7 at Delaware Park.  Today's Horse Racing Picks: Top pick: #12 (ROYAL STONE) - Filly was sent long last out and finished an even third in a race with a runaway winner. First two races came in sprints and she'll be cutting back in distance for this attempt. Claimed out of her last by Jeff Harris, he has won with over half of his starters (5 for 9). The pick. 2nd pick: #4 (Summer at Last) - Professional maiden has hit the board in 8 of her 11 starts. Has plenty of speed but tends to tire late. This field is a bit "lite" so she has a solid chance. 3rd pick: #2 (Lil Ava Lou) - Filly made a wide middle move in her latest to finish a solid 3rd. She's improving with racing and is a threat. 4th pick: #3 (Mizara) - Under-rated trainer John Wames sends out this firster who has a "bullet" 5 furlong drill on her work tab. Could impact this in her debut. DELAWARE PARK Race #2 at 1:10 PM Eastern Top pick: #3 (AGORA JA) - Filly ships in from Penn National seeking her 3rd in a row. Much improved since blinkers were added to her equipment, she was claimed two back by a top outfit (Tim Kreiser) and won first out for him. 2nd pick: #2 (Wheredideveryonego) - Draws the rail and has good mid-pack stalking ability. Competitive at this price and a contender for the win. 3rd pick: #5 (Charmed By Charlie) - Rallied late in her last pair at this tag to finish with minor awards. Mike Gorham trained mare was competitive against better earlier this year and she should run well. 4th pick: #4 (Pennant Dancer) - Deep closer ships from Penn National seeking her 3rd in a row. Not as accomplished as the top three, a small slice may be her ceiling. DELAWARE PARK Race #7 at 3:25 PM Eastern Top pick: #2 (BALROG) - Speedy runner looks set for a big effort in this, his 4th race after being away almost 10 months. Had problems at the start of his latest at Timonium but still rallied to finish 2nd. Clean break could lead to a wire-to-wire win. 2nd pick: #1 (Brash Polish) - Ships in from Penn National for this attempt. Drops in price and shortens up in distance for a top trainer (Tim Kreiser). He chased the pace in the slop in his latest before tiring. Strong rival from a stalking position. 3rd pick: #6 (First Grandson) - Cuts back for a good barn (Andy Simoff). Tired last out around two-turns, and previous tries at this distance were competitive. Square price is expected. PHILADELPHIA PARK Race #10 at 4:15 PM Eastern Top pick: #6 (DR DALE) - Runner tired last out going long in his first start in 18 months. Gelding held well to finish 3rd in a race in all probability he needed badly. Cuts back a furlong and a turn, for this 2nd try off the bench. Draws a nice post to try and steal this in this paceless race on paper. 2nd pick: #4 (Valridge) - He comes back to action at a new low in price off a 5 month absence. Had some quality efforts earlier this year, and a return to them would make him a win threat. 3rd pick: #10 (Greeley's Song) - Dropped in for a tag last out and he finished a well-beated 3rd while going long. Drops again and cuts-back in distance. Contender. 4th pick: #11 (Doctor Diesel) - He's finished on the board in his last five starts for trainer Ron Glorioso.
