Horse Racing Best Bets - September 25, 2008An interesting challenger for "Curlin" has decided to give it a go on Saturday in the $750,000 "Jockey Club Gold Cup" (G1) at Belmont. The Allen Jerkens-trained "Merchant Marine" will take on the reigning Horse of the Year in his attempt to become North America's all-time leading money earner. He's a serious threat, as he has excellent early speed and he has shown that he absolutely loves the Belmont strip. Today, we have another four races from Belmont for selections and analysis. Today's Best Bet is #7 Smokin Hero in Race #2 at Belmont Park. Wednesday's Results: Belmont Park Race #2 Best Bet scratched. Ex. (3-6) $10.60. Belmont Park Race #9 Top Pick #5 (J T Moore) $7.70.  Today's Horse Racing Picks: Top pick: #7 (SMOKIN HERO) - Gelding has finished second in all four of his appearances. Has excellent early speed to call upon and draws outside which should lead to an easy lead. The choice for the win. 2nd pick: #2 (Vinnie Van Go) - Improving runner rallied late in his last to finish second to a runaway winner. Sharp work since and son of "Hook and Ladder" is the main danger. 3rd pick: #6 (Haynesfield) - Showed some speed in his debut but tired late to finish a distant third. He was beaten close to double-digits (nine lengths) by the top pick in that one. BELMONT PARK Race #4 at 2:30 PM Eastern Top pick: #6 (SALLY'S SONG) - Blinkers will go on for trainer Todd Pletcher after filly raced evenly while very wide in her debut on July 28. Freshened up for two months since, think she'll run much better today. 2nd pick: #1 (Concorde's Dance) - Good speed shown in her turf debut at Saratoga on August 22. Raced a bit "head-strong" early but settled and held well when she looked beaten turning for home. Working well and shortens up for this. 3rd pick: #2 (Nan) - Closed late in her turf debut in a sprint to just miss at Saratoga on July 28. Showed speed chasing a fast pace on the dirt in start number two. Working well and she moves back to the grass. 4th pick: #8 (Just Livin a Dream) - Closed strongly at 5.5 furlongs to just miss on the Saratoga infield on August 29. She should appreciate today's extra yardage. BELMONT PARK Race #5 at 3:00 PM Eastern Top pick: #2b (FIONA FREUD) - Filly has been a solid performer all season, and in her last start at Saratoga she finally broke her maiden. Good speed/stalking style to utilize and she's the choice to make it two in a row. 2nd pick: #8 (Lightintheforest) - Cuts back in distance off a pair of good efforts at this tag going longer at Saratoga. Lightly raced and she is a player in this sprint. 3rd pick: #2 (Laurens Go Go) - Coupled in the wagering with the top pick, she is lightly raced and broke her maiden in her only turf start. Brings good speed to the contest and is a strong compliment to the choice. 4th pick: #4 (Kevazinga) - Filly ran well last out despite a poor start against better. Drops into a claimer and shortens up to a sprint. 5th pick: #7 (Happens in Vegas) - Raced well on the turf two back in her first start off a Gary Contessa claim. Fits with these if she runs her best and should be a nice price. BELMONT PARK Race #8 at 4:30 PM Eastern Top pick: #5 (DEBBIE GOT EVEN) - Filly finished second last out in a small stake at Saratoga going seven furlongs. She finished second in her last effort on this surface at this distance. Race was her strongest in the past two years and makes her a big player today. 2nd pick: #6 (Lucky Revival) - Mare would appear to be the lone speed of the group. Capable of wiring this group if left unattended on the front end. 3rd pick: #4 (Boca Grande) - Classy filly was highly regarded at one time but will be making only her third start since last October.
