Handicapping The Kentucky Derby - September 15, 2008

With the major centers closed today, we have a total of four races, three from Delaware and one from Philadelphia Park.

Today's Best Bet is #5 Sugar Baby Love in Race #7 at Delaware Park.

Sunday's Results: Belmont Park Race #4 Exacta (5-1) $83.00.
T-Fecta (5-1-6) $178.00.

Today's Horse Racing Picks:

DELAWARE PARK Race #1 at 12:45 PM Eastern

Top pick: #3 (LASTRAW) - Scott Lake-trained runner has finished second in his pair of starts for this $10,000 tag. Speed/stalking talent to use and he brings an experience edge over our second pick. Think he'll outfinish that rival.
2nd pick: #2 (Free Up Grade) - Throw out his debut at Santa Anita and he's won three of his last four including a pair on this surface. Moves up off his latest win, but lightly-raced runner could still have more improvement in him.
3rd pick: #6 (Print the Legend) - Finished an even fourth for this tag at Belmont on Sept. 4. He's a better horse since coming to Dave Jacobson's barn and he brings a stalking style to the contest.
4th pick: #1 (Letterman's Humor) - Drops and has a touch of closing punch. May hit the exotics, but a win would be a stretch.

PHILADELPHIA PARK Race #4 at 1:35 PM Eastern
Top pick: #4 (START OVER) - Basically just ran around the track in his debut against $40,000 foes. Drops down to $12,500 and could turn it around quickly in start number two.
2nd pick: #6 (Flush Flop) - Probable favorite has hit the board in seven of 11 starts, but appears to lack that "killer" instinct. Contender, but beatable at a short price.
3rd pick: #9 (Brave Bandito) - Starts for a new trainer and it's a definite upgrade to Velazquez. Colt could easily improve enough in this poor field to contend.

DELAWARE PARK Race #5 at 2:30 PM Eastern
Top pick: #11 (MORGAN'S RUN) - Blinkers will go on today for trainer Todd Pletcher after filly ran a tracking race in her return from a half-years layoff at Saratoga. Dominguez is enlisted so it looks like this is the "money" run.
2nd pick: #1 (Move It) - $300,000 daughter of "More Than Ready" showed some ability at Gulfstream Park on the dirt in her first series of races. Freshened up for four months by trainer Mike Matz, filly ran well in her first turf race which was at Saratoga in late August. Makes her second start off the break and she should offer her best.
3rd pick: #2 (Santa Vindi) - Raced evenly in her first turf start and it came in her second off a spring layoff. Nicely bred daughter of "Vindication" is headed in the right direction for trainer Paul Fout.
4th pick: #3 (Hold) - Daughter of "Include" moves to the infield for the first time after showing some ability on the dirt. Trainer Richard Small is a bit of a turf specialist and filly could move forward today.
Special Race Notes: Selections if this race is run on the main track are: #5-Sahara Wind #1-Move It #2-Santa Vindi #3-Hold

DELAWARE PARK Race #7 at 3:25 PM Eastern
Top pick: #5 (SUGAR BABY LOVE) - Logical contender and probable favorite has finished second in her last three starts, all at this condition. Freshened up since a strong second place finish on this course on July 4, she's the horse to beat.
2nd pick: #1 (Great Kate Above) - Draws the hedge and she has become a much better runner this year (5-1-1-3). Strong finisher gets to save all the ground before launching her bid. Square price is part of the bargain.
3rd pick: #9 (Theda's Smile) - Very consistent turf runner (15-1-6-4), has run well on this course(6-1-3-2) and and only was about a length off the choice the last time they met. Very dangerous.
4th pick: #10 (A P Fortune) - Lightly raced and from a good barn (Mike Matz), filly had little chance in her debut when she was bumped heavily at the start. Contender with a clean break.
5th pick: #3 (More Memories) - All three turf starts are solid and filly who is shipping in from Monmouth brings fine tactical speed to the race.
