Horse Racing Entry - September 12, 2008This Saturday at Monmouth, "Big Brown " will face-off against 10 challengers in the newly created "Monmouth" stakes, a $500,000 contest that will be run at 1 1/8th miles on the turf. Race will be his first attempt on the grass, and the field assembled is a solid one and he'll have to be at his best to be victorious. We'll include this good-looking betting event as one of our five races on Saturday's Newsletter. Today we'll go back to Belmont for another four-spot for analysis and selections. Today's Best Bet is #8 Messa Nera in Race #9 at Belmont Park. Thursday's Results: We had winners listed in all four of our Belmont Races: Race # 4 (#3 Show Me the Cash $9.80) Race #5 (#1 Crazy Cat Lady $10.00), Race #7 (#10 Counting House $12.20), Race #9 (#7 Sweet Bama Breeze $5.30), but did not have them "on top," nor could we hook them up correctly in the exactas.  Today's Horse Racing Picks: Top pick: #7 (SHIRLEY LAW) - Takes the all-important drop from maiden special races into a claimer today. She's shown good speed in several of her sprint attempts and she's the choice to win this. 2nd pick: #4 (Chernobyl Princess) - Freshened up since July 11, daughter of "Say Florida Sandy" will run today with both lasix administered and blinkers on. Works are good and I expect her to be in front for as long as she can last. 3rd pick: #8 (Overuled) - Drops a peg and has blinkers added in her second start back off a seven-week break. She was competitive in her latest and is a stretch factor today. 4th pick: #9 (Judiciary) - She continues to plug along and pick up some minor awards. She needs to finish better, but in this weak group, that's entirely possible. BELMONT PARK Race #3 at 2:00 PM Eastern Top pick: #1 (BE GLORIOUS) - Filly will make her first start on a "real" dirt track after spending the early part of her career on California "poly-surfaces". Very recent arrival (she worked at Santa Anita on Sep. 5) may do well fresh "off the plane." Hall of Famer Bob Frankel is calling the shots. 2nd pick: #7 (Persistent Penny) - Probable favorite and logical selection. She's run well in all three of her "dirt" races and is lightly raced and improving. Filly by "A.P.Indy" could have some real talent. 3rd pick: #2 (Shopit) - Another runner trained by a Hall of Famer. This filly is conditioned by Allen Jerkens. Certainly fit enough, has a sharp recent drill, and could offer some wagering value. 4th pick: #5 (Ocean Goddess) - Tired in her return race at the Spa., a contest where she also had some traffic issues. Stretches-out in her second off the bench and has a strong interim work. May lead them a long ways. BELMONT PARK Race #5 at 3:00 PM Eastern Top pick: #6 (DIRTY WATER DOG) - Returns to the track where he's done his best work. Had a wide post and traffic woes in a start at Saratoga against tougher on August 17. Lightly raced, he drops back to the price and scene of his last win. 2nd pick: #4 (Vision of Sunrise) - Drops back down from an allowance to a $35K claimer which was the level of his last win. Has some tactical speed and should be in this from start-to-finish. 3rd pick: #13 (Yario) - Needs a pair of scratches to compete. Lightly-raced son of top English sire "Danehill Dancer" has faced tougher his whole career and would be an instant win contender if he were to scratch in. 4th pick: #2 (Bright Illusion) - Solid turf runner (15-2-2-3) and both of his grass wins are on this course. This tag is whee he does his best work and he's a contender for the exotics. BELMONT PARK Race #9 at 5:00 PM Eastern Top pick: #8 (MESSA NERA) - Ran a better race in his last at the Spa. then it looks. Had the inside going seven-furlongs in a large field (11), moved up several times but could not gain late. Race was his first in three months, and he should be much fitter today. The horse to beat. 2nd pick: #3 (Analyze Cat) - Broke slowly in his latest at the Spa. Race was his first in 10 months and he may have needed it badly. Drops into a claimer today and gets the addition of lasix for trainer Bruce Levine. Trainer is one of the best second time back (35%). 3rd pick: #7 (Run Lightening Run) - He's finished in the money in his last three starts, two of which have come at this distance and level on this track. Contender from mid-pack. 4th pick: #9 (Louann's Boot) - Makes his third lifetime start, drops into a claimer for the first time, and will try a mile distance today.
