Horse Racing Methods Systems - September 10, 2008

With rain falling up and down the east coast on Tuesday the prospect of an "off the turf" day at Belmont is a strong possibility, so we've limited our plays to the scheduled dirt contests.

Today's Best Bet is #5 Fort McCoy in Race #4 at Belmont Park.

Tuesday’s Results: Philadelphia Park Race #6 Ex  (6-1) $12.20.
T-fecta (6-1-3) $28.20.

Today's Horse Racing Picks:

BELMONT PARK Race #1 at 1:00 PM Eastern

Top pick: #6 (PAY WHAT YOU OWE) - Probably needed his last start, and trainer Mark Hennig chose a turf race at the $35,000 level for that purpose. Drops down to $15K and moves back to the dirt and the distance of his maiden win.
2nd pick: #4 (Fly the North Wind) - Likes this course (5-0-2-2) and is one of the few entered who has proven "route" experience. "Off" track would help his chances out as most of these will be backing up through the lane.
3rd pick: #3 (Up the Limit) - Lightly raced and improving, like most of trainer Chad Brown's runners. Broke his maiden in his last start at Monmouth for $10K. Has speed/stalking ability as he runs against winners and tries a distance, both for the first time.
4th pick: #2 (Precisely Greg) - Ran just five days ago and the effort was very good. Stretches-out in distance and this race may have been their intended target.

BELMONT PARK Race #2 at 1:30 PM Eastern
Top pick: #2 (SELECTIVE) - Excellent debut saw her set/press a fast pace and stay on strongly to be beaten a half-length by a well-bet first timer. Daughter of "Tapit" has a pair of "maintanance" drills since and may be too quick for this field.
2nd pick: #8 (Spell Check) - Well-backed in her debut, filly had a ton of trouble on that sloppy track at Saratoga. Had problems at the start and was forced to race 7-8 wide the entire contest. She's worked fast since and could improve dramatically today.
3rd pick: #1 (West Court) - Daughter of "Gone West" cost a cool $300,000 at auction and will make her debut today off of some quick drills. Draws the rail and attracts Alan Garcia. Big gate work on the August 22, on the Belmont training track.

BELMONT PARK Race #4 at 2:30 PM Eastern
Top pick: #5 (FORT McCOY) - Linda Rice-trained runner will be making his second start back off a layoff and will drop into a claimer for the first time. Speed has been present in his three career starts and he should offer his best under today's conditions.
2nd pick: #7 (Western Call) - Freshened up since a strong second place finish on this track at this distance and tag in early July. Race was only his second at this $25,000 price after racing against tougher earlier in his career.
3rd pick: #2 (Rock Key) - He's hit the board the last two times he's raced for a tag and that's today's situation. Cuts back to six-furlongs and that appears to be his best distance.
4th pick: #8 (Wanna Winna) - Freshened up since early July when he ran fourth in the same race that "Western Call" is exiting. He's "hit the board" in three of five on this track and is a late threat, especially if the speed collapses.
5th pick: #4 (Mr. Destiny) - Lightly-raced runner has also been freshened up and has a sharp recent drill for trainer Gary Gullo. Could lead a long ways at big odds.

BELMONT PARK Race #8 at 4:30 PM Eastern
Top pick: #7 (VALIANT HUMOR) - Son of "Distorted Humor" has improved since a claim by current trainer Greg DiPrima. Broke his maiden last out at Saratoga in a good-looking performance and is reasonabally spotted today in his first try against winners.
2nd pick: #1 (Papa Jerry) - Speed on the rail and he'll be making his second start back off a two month layoff. Any move forward off his return will put him in the win mix.
3rd pick: #10 (At Attention) - Claimed recently by Bruce Brown and he's finished in the money at this tag in both of his starts for his new connections. Must overcome a poor post today.
4th pick: #8 (Estimator) - He's finished "on the board" in five of his six starts in claiming races. Can finish fairly well on a good day and he holds an experience edge in here over most.
