Horse Handicapping - September 05, 2008

Belmont's Fall Championship meeting opens today with the usual 1:00 p.m. (EST) post time.

Also today, racing in Southern California switches to the Fairplex facility at the Los Angeles County Fair Grounds.

We have four races from Belmont Park for selections and analysis on our Friday Racing Newsletter.

Today's Best bet is #2 Celestial Diamond in Race #2 at Belmont Park.

Today's Horse Racing Picks:

BELMONT PARK Race #1 at 1:00 PM Eastern

Top pick: #3 (RUMSPRINGA) - Drops in half off a troubled try at Saratoga in the slop on July 23. Draws the rail and has never raced this low before.
2nd pick: #2b (Deputy G) - Another who drops to this $10K price tag for the first time. Runner hasn't raced since mid-May but has been in steady training at Delaware Park for the past two months.
3rd pick: #5 (Soulshine) - Finger Lakes shipper was a regular on this circuit at one time and has three previous wins on this surface to call upon.
4th pick: #1a (Lights of Broadway) - Draws a tough post for this but will be dropping to a new low in value for the first time. Has some speed and that may allow him to avoid a wide trip from this outside post.

BELMONT PARK Race #2 at 1:30 PM Eastern
Top pick: #2 (CELESTIAL DIAMOND) - Showed big debut speed at the Spa. before being raced into defeat by a good-looking winner. Son of "Malibu Moon" has worked sharply since and may get the "jump" on this small group.
2nd pick: #1 (Ventana) - Son of the young sire "Toccet", was in steady training in So. California before shipping east with part of the Baffert string. Trainer only brings those to this coast that are real runners.
3rd pick: #4 (Prince Charming) - Had a good educational debut at Belmont in mid-July. Stayed close to a fast pace in a talented field and tired late. Freshened up since by Jimmy Jerkens, trainer is one of the best second time out (41%).

BELMONT PARK Race #4 at 2:30 PM Eastern
Top pick: #1 (Evolutionist) - Bred for the grass, he was entered in his debut in a two-turn turf race at Saratoga, but like many in the first part of the meet, race was switched to the main track. Kinsman Farm home-bred should be sharp in start number two.
2nd pick: #12 (Into My Soul) - Needs a scratch in the main-body to compete. Colt was scheduled to run on the turf twice at the Spa., but both races were washed off the infield. Could impact this at a square price if allowed to run.
3rd pick: #5 (Precious Beans) - The field's most experienced runner has exhibited some speed/stalking ability and worked well on the Spa. turf in early August. Hustling rider (Chavez) takes over, so expect him to be involved from the start.
4th pick: #2 (Insider) - Another who was set to race on the turf last out, but ran anyway when the race was switched. Showed some speed that day and that commodity is always a plus in these two-year-old contests.
5th pick: #10 (Invisible Star) - Didn't do much running in his Belmont debut on July 11. He's in the Pletcher barn, and stable-jock Johnny V. takes over. Works are sparse and on the slow side.

BELMONT PARK Race #9 at 5:00 PM Eastern
Top pick: #2 (MAHOPAC) - Bred for the turf, runner by "Lido Palace" showed good speed in his dirt debut in mid-July. Training well after a freshening, he moves to the grass and draws the rail for the tough Hushion barn.
2nd pick: #10 (No Lien Here) - West-coast transplant will race on something other than "poly" for the first time. He's shown high speed in his races and is working well for this. Big player.
3rd pick: #1 (City Sneakers) - Runner from the Linda Rice barn trained well at Saratoga, but didn't run there. Freshened up since late June, trainer's reputation with turf sprinters is now well known.
4th pick: #4 (Fortissi More) - Veteran continues to nibble at various distances and may have enough closing punch to hit the tri and/or super.
5th pick: #1a (On With It) - The other half of the Rice entry ran a strong second in a switched race back in June. Training well, and is a factor if he goes.
