Horse Handicapper - September 02, 2008With the major centers closed today and Belmont not reopening until Friday, we'll be improvising as to the tracks we call upon this week. Today we have four races, two each from Delaware and Philadelphia Park. Today's Best Bet (TURF ONLY) is #6 Schopenhauer in Race #5 at Delaware Park. Monday's Results: Saratoga Race #2 Top Pick #8 (Gem For Hook) $4.90. Saratoga Race #5 Top Pick #2 (Mrs. Holden) $11.20 to place, was disqualified (unjustly I thought) from first at 10-1 odds.  Today's Horse Racing Picks: Top pick: #1 (CAMILLA'S CATCH) - Draws the coveted rail and will be trying a distance for the first time. Speedy colt is dropping a peg after a solid third place finish in his last at Delaware. Trainer (Tim Ritchey) is very strong on the stretch-out move (29%). 2nd pick: #7 (Dangerous Dude) - Drops into a claimer for the first time for trainer Mike Matz. Has some races on his resume that could win this and he has a sharp recent drill at Delaware in preparation for this. 3rd pick: #2 (Money For Love) - Drops into a claimer for the first time and he'll also run for trainer Dale Capuano off a recent switch from Robin Graham. Gelding has been freshened up since late June when his form went sour. 4th pick: #5 (Robey's Choice) - Blinkers are added to gelding who has shown some ability sprinting. He too will race "tagged" for the first time and a sharp recent drill at Laurel adds to the plusses. PHILADELPHIA PARK Race #3 at 1:15 PM Eastern Top pick: #4 (TALIKE ME) - Chased a fast pace on July 27 before levelling off late to finish second. Race was her first in nine months and first for trainer Alan Goldberg. She's been given almost five weeks to recover and filly has a pair of solid recent works. 2nd pick: #2 (Indycat) - Finished well in his last at Charles Town, his first race since early February. Filly fits here and has run well on this strip in the past. 3rd pick: #5 (Latenight Surprise) - Good-looking debut saw this filly stay close and rally late for the place spot. Race was last October, but trainer Dove Houghton has won with six of her last 11 starters with a similar six month or better layoff. DELAWARE PARK Race #4 at 2:05 PM Eastern Top pick: #7 (RISK IT ALL FOR ME) - Missed narrowly at this distance and price-tag last out. He's only recently slid down to this bottom level and a repeat of his last would win this. 2nd pick: #5 (Proud Capote) - Colt hasn't been out in almost 11 months and will return today off that long break racing for the bottom tag ($5000) at this meet. More than capable of winning this if ready. 3rd pick: #6 (I Pick You) - Beaten almost eight lengths by the top pick last out, he's finished fourth in his last pair at this tag without threatening. 4th pick: #8 (Dr. Megavolt) - Speedy sort will be making his second attempt at this price. Lead looks to be his and he'll take them as far as he can. There is no other speed signed up, so runner has a legitimate shot at "wiring" this group. DEALWARE PARK Race #5 at 2:30 PM Eastern Top pick: #6 (SCHOPENHAUER) - Son of Giant's Causeway will be making his first U.S. start after racing three times in England. Maiden was trained in Europe by a good one (Luca Cumani) and is now in the barn of Graham Motion. Scratched the other day at Saratoga to await this spot. 2nd pick: #1 (Sailaway Pops) - Improving runner just broke him maiden so he'll be facing winners for the first time. Has the best early speed and draws the hedge. 3rd pick: #11 (Lemon Cream Pie) - Just missed last out at this condition, on this course. Stalker is nearing his peak and is a logical contender against this group. 4th pick: #12 (Jansdream) - Poor post will not help this runner who has no speed and has been racing evenly for some time now. 5th pick: #8 (King Bling) - Veteran has finished in the money in two of his four starts at this conditioning. Fringe player again today, he may be able to hit the tri and or super.
