Free Horse Racing Handicapping - September 01, 2008

Since it's the unofficial last day of Summer, and the end of the Saratoga meet, we'll offer five races today instead of the normal four.

Today's Best Bet is #3 Dynaforce in Race #8 at Saratoga.

Today's Horse Racing Picks:

SARATOGA Race #2 at 1:30 PM Eastern

Top pick: #8 (GEM FOR THE HOOK) - Trainer (John Kimmel) has been red-hot over the past three days having sent out five winners. This fily chased the pace at this distance on August 13, and held well for the place. She's worked sharply since and comes back quickly for this (18 days).
2nd pick: #2 (By the Sky) - Firster by a good, win-early sire: "Sky Mesa" is in a barn (Barclay Tagg) that has had a very solid meet (38-8-3-3). Great gate drill on August 20, signals that she's ready to go.
3rd pick: #5 (Vintage Tough) - Ships in from Finger Lakes for a veteran trainer (Mike Ferraro) who always has a high win percentage. Works are much better than average and Albarado is enlisted.
4th pick: #6 (Pals First Lady) - Rallied into a fast pace to finish second in her debut on August 15. I think she passed some very tired runners that day and may be overbet a bit because of her "in the money" finish.

SARATOGA Race #3 at 2:00 PM Eastern
Top pick: #6 (TEND) - Talented, lightly-raced colt rallied nicely in a sprint here against a strong speed bias on August 9 to finish second. Two-turn nature of this race would seem to fit him as he makes his second start back after a 10-month layoff. Pace here should be fast/contested which will help out his style.
2nd pick: #1 (Stealth Missle) - Impressive win last out at this distance in a race switched to the main track. Fields only three-time winner was making his second start off a layoff, which followed a claim by trainer Mike Maker.
3rd pick: #4 (Stevil) - Chased the pace in a race early in the meet which was won by the promising "Acai". Race was his first since he was on the "Triple Crown" trail, so he may have needed the effort. Should run much better today.
4th pick: #2 (Discreet Treasure) - Lightly raced son of "El Prado*" had a tough race last out, as he was forced to run hard every step. Promising colt will need to do so again to have any chance at a win.

SARATOGA Race #5 at 3:00 PM Eastern
Top pick: #2 (MRS. HOLDEN) - Ran a strong second three back at Belmont sprinting on the turf. Last out filly "bobbled" at the start, rushed up along the inside, then was spent in the last furlong. She's come back to work smartly and draws the hedge. Wire-to-wire threat.
2nd pick: #1a (Sweet Bama Breeze) - Part of a Linda Rice entry, filly needs a pair of scratches to get in, one of which could be her stable-mate. Daughter of "City Zip" has finished second in her two turf tries, both of which were sprints.
3rd pick: #1 (Ofcr. Sheila T. Rex) - Scratched the other day from a dirt race to await this spot. Her last pair were both good efforts and they came after a seven-month layoff. Recent grass drill was good and that may be where her future is.
4th pick: #3 (City Broad) - Daughter of "City Zip" showed some promise last fall/winter when she finished second in her first two starts. Away since mid-April after a poor try at Aqueduct, filly has been given time to grow and mature by trainer John Morrison. Could impact this at a nice price.
5th pick: #8 (Meese Rocks) - Hugged the hedge from start-to-finish in her debut and it led to a third place finish. Any move forward puts her in the thick of this.

SARATOGA Race #8 (THE GLEN FALLS) at 4:30 PM Eastern
Top pick: #3 (DYNAFORCE) - Mare has certainly proven to be one of quality and just missed in her U.S. debut to "Mauralakana", who has been unbeatable this season. Daughter of "Dynaformer" came back with a strong try in the "Diana" when finishing a game second to "Forever Together". Runs today against a G3 group and that should land her in the winner's circle.
2nd pick: #6 (Palmilla) - Won her last at Delaware at this demanding 11-furlong distance when the third finisher had some problems "switching leads" in mid-stretch. Augustin home-bred looks well prepared by trainer Jonathan Sheppard.
3rd pick: #1 (Tejida) - Has good speed to employ and draws the hedge. Working sharply for this and mare loves to have her races about two months apart, like today. Speed threat from the inside.

SARATOGA Race #11 at 6:10 PM Eastern
Top pick: #4 (JUST A WARNING) - Colt has had problems at the start in his last three and that's compromised his chances of getting the job done. Drops to a career soft spot and think he's a big win contender.
2nd pick: #6 (Skywire) - Son of "Sky Mesa" makes his return to the races off an eight-month layoff and a trainer change to George Weaver. Colt is working in fast fashion and attracts Prado for the come-backer.
3rd pick: #9 (Paisano Creek) - Chris Clement trained runner ran evenly in his only appearance, last December at Calder. Raced evenly that day and finished fourth in a good field. Works are solid for the return run.
4th pick: #7 (Gemology) - Repatriated son of "Horse Chestnut" ran well in his only two turf appearances, one in the mid-east and the other in England. Works are good for the Pletcher barn, and runner will race with lasix for the first time.
5th pick: #8 (To Tell the Truth) - Stretches-out, drops into a claimer, and will move to the infield for start number two. Raced evenly in a good maiden field last out on the dirt and it would be no surprise to see him improve dramatically given all the changes that are being made.
