Monmouth Park Race #9 Top Pick Winner #4 (Ginger Punch) Paid $11. ![]() Today's Horse Racing Picks: (# 7) GAME FACE - Excellent debut run at Churchill Downs on June 10. Stalked a very fast pace, moved with the winner, got her head in front, but was outkicked late and settled for second. Has some sharp Saratoga works since coming east for Pletcher, and she is the horse to beat. (# 3) Zaftig - Has some very sharp AM work on her resume, and daughter of "Gone West" attracts Coa for the Jimmy Jerkens barn. Jockey/trainer combination is winning at 28% over the past two years. (# ) Little Belle - Darley Stable color bearer goes for yesterday's Filly and Mare Turf Breeder's Cup winning combo, Garcia and McLaughlin. Steady works, with a few quick ones thrown in is usually a sign of talent. (# 2) Timber Trick - Raced greenly in debut at Belmont and fell behind by quite a few before getting up late for third. On this normally much more speed favoring surface, she can ill afford to fall that far back again. AQUEDUCT Race #FOUR (2:30 PM Eastern) (# 8) NEW YORK CITI - Makes her second lifetime start today for the Kim Laudati Jackson(Gary Contessa) barn. Trainer has another week left on his medication violation suspension. Well bet in debut, she was up close to the top and had to settle for second to an impressive wire-to-wire winner. Has had three weeks since the first race and should get her diploma. (# 1) Golden Manna - Fields most experienced runner draws the usually good rail at the Big A, and has some positional speed. Should receive a nice journey, and has a shot at the top if the firsters come up light. (# 6) Pretty Gal - Has offered improvement in each of her four starts for a barn that exudes patience. Trainer ususlly does good work during the fall and winter. More improvement puts her on the wire with these. (# 3) Sky Ballet - Light work tab leading into her first race for the Hushion barn. Daughter of "Buddha" has three much better than average works of late, so the lack of listed drills should not be of any concern. SANTA ANITA Race #TWO (4:00 PM Eastern) (# 1) DOWNTOWN LOVER - Ran well in last from an outside post last out. Made a four wide bid around the turn, got the lead in early stretch but could not hold late. Moves to the rail today, and may get a better trip. (# 5) Warren's Mystery - Defeated the top pick in last by a length, and she is very close to the top selection in my figures. Showed a lot of grit in last as she was between horses the whole race before making some headway late. (# 8) Bestatit - Poor ride and overall effort in her return from 10 months on the sidelines. Barn (Mullins) has strong numbers with runners making their second start after long layoffs (27%). Not sure about todays rider. No info is available. (# 12) Bench Wench - Three strong efforts to begin her career in the summer. Tries a new surface today, and has neither run or worked over it so far. May be overbet. (# 3) Madonna Mia - Cuts back in distance and drops in claiming value today. The fields lone four-year-old is a Brazilian import, and is a curious entrant, as her races indicate ability, but bad placing by her connections. SANTA ANITA Race #THREE (4:30 PM Eastern) (# 4) CATEGORIZE - Goes second off a layoff for the Mullins operation. Has proven back class, and very good stalking ability. Barn is great in the second time back situation (25%). Throw in a sharp work and she's much the horse to beat. (# 1) Love Ya - Cuts back in distance for this after running in a series of two-turn races at various venues. Has some speed, but the No. 2 horse is quicker than her so she'll be put into a stalking mode. (# 2) La Swing - Great effort first off the Gary Stute claim. Went wire-to-wire over this tricky turf and distance. Filly likes to win (7 for 20), and has another sharp work four days before this race, and that proved successful last time out.
