Harness Horse Racing - October 19, 2008The two day "Breeder's Cup" is now only a few days away. The opening day of the event is this coming Friday and will feature five races - all for fillies and mares. Saturday's card will have nine races - all for colts. Official entries and post positions will be drawn this Tuesday and Wunderdog Racing will publish a Newsletter for each of the two days. Don't miss out on all the action! Today, we'll have four races, one from the site of this year's "Cup" races - Santa Anita with the other three coming from Belmont Park. Today's Best Bet is #5 Solitaire in Race #2 at Belmont Park. Saturday's Results:Belmont Park Race #3 Top Pick #2 (Pegasian) $5.80. ![]() Today's Horse Racing Picks: Top pick: #5 (SOLITAIRE) - Ships down from Woodbine after a series of fine races including a third place finish in the $1,000,000 "Queens Plate". I don't see many horses that have earned over $200,000 without yet winning a race, but that's the case. Heavy favorite will be very tough to defeat. 2nd pick: #6 (Uncle Indy) - Freshened-up for almost two months by trainer Angel Penna Jr. Colt appears to be able to run all day, and has been competitive in his '08 turf races. The only danger to the choice. 3rd pick: #3 (Offshore) - Beautifully-bred colt from the "Phipps" operation. Promise shown two back at Saratoga when he finished second, but he regressed in his local debut when he caught a course with some moisture. Goes better today. 4th pick: #7 (Upper Gulch) - Improvement noted since blinkers went on three back. Patient barn (Pat Kelly) and runner has the look of one who may have a future. The top pair appear too much for him at this stage. BELMONT PARK Race #4 at 2:30 PM Eastern Top pick: #8 (NOWHERE TO HIDE) - Colt by the late "Vindication" ran a big race at this tricky one-turn mile distance last out. Race a bit off the pace, rallied on the turn and fought it out gamely to the end, losing by a half-length. Draws a nice outside post and he's the choice for the win. 2nd pick: #5 (Proud Ruler) - He's finished evenly in his first two races, both of which were sprints. Trainer Bill Mott sends him a distance for the first time and he adds blinkers for the attempt. Colt is working like he's ready to show his best. 3rd pick: #3 (Retriever) - Set all the pace in the same race as the top pick and he held gamely all the way to finish a close-up third. Expect them to try similar tactics today. 4th pick: #4 (Conservative) - Blinkers and lasix are both added today to this "Phipps" home-bred. Raced wide and never was in the race in his debut. Look for an improved run here. SANTA ANITA Race #1 at 3:30 PM Eastern Top pick: #6 (FLEW FIRST CLASS) - Raced evenly and encountered some traffic just when the race was getting serious last out. Makes her second start for Brian Koriner and she has a pair of solid drills since her latest. Ready for her best. 2nd pick: #7 (Sister Lucy) - Well backed at the windows in her debut, filly broke from the rail and was involved in a serious speed duel before tiring late. Moves outside and gets the addition of lasix. Big win threat. 3rd pick: #3 (Burna Dette) - Chased the pace and held well late to finish second despite being floated wide turning for home. Improving sort may go off the favorite. BELMONT PARK Race #8 at 4:30 PM Eastern Top pick: #5 (PAISANO CREEK) - Bred for the turf and lightly raced. Son of "El Prado" is in a good barn (Chris Clement) and broke his maiden in smart fashion when blinkers were added for his most recent start. Meets a lackluster bunch and jockey Joe Bravo comes in from New Jersey for the return ride. 2nd pick: #2 (Swift Strike) - Floated wide in his last at this tag and distance, he finished well to be beaten only two lengths. Draws the hedge and he'll get to save all the ground. Big effort is expected. 3rd pick: #1a (Moore Miles) - Mid-pack type has some good efforts at this distance and in his latest on this course was about six wide the entire race, yet was beaten only five lengths. Coa, who had other options, winds up here. 4th pick: #6 (Senor Enrico) - He's been finishing evenly in his recent races and is stretched back out off a sprint on October 10. Well set-up to offer his best at a very nice price. ![]() Horse Racing Picks Resources:
