Horse Racing Tip Sheets - October 16, 2008The "Breeder's Cup World Thoroughbred Championships" are just over a week away. This year's two-day format will feature Fillies and Mares on Friday October 24, with the Males taking center-stage on Saturday, Oct. 25. Event will be held at Santa Anita and therefore the non-turf contests will be held on their new Pro Ride (artificial) surface. Wunderdog Racing's Newsletter for each day will be available on Thursday October 23rd. Don't miss out on the action! Today with Belmont reopening after a pair of "dark" days, we'll go there for three and out to Santa Anita for a single contest. With rain in the forecast, Belmont's turf races could be switched to the main track. Please note our alternate selections under Special Race Notes for races #2 and #4 at Belmont if that's the case. Today's Best Bet is #3 Apocalyptical in Race #4 at Belmont Park. Wednesday's Results: Laurel Race #2 Ex. (Box of top two 1-3) $42.20. ![]() Today's Horse Racing Picks: Top pick: #9 (PHIL THE BRIT) - Good record at this distance(9-3-2-1) and veteran ships in off a sharp try at Monmouth for this pricetag. Likes to race about 3-5 lengths from the lead and make one run. That strategy should work well in this field. 2nd pick: #10 (Hurrah) - Speed/stalker draws a good post and will race for this $10,000 tag for the first time. Competitive all year (12-2-4-2) at a variety of tracks and distances, he's coming off a good second-place finish on this surface. Win contender. 3rd pick: #6 (Mithaal) - Freshened up by trainer Bruce Brown after a claim at Monmouth on Sept. 17 for $5000. Veteran fits if ready and new trainer is a solid 31% with his new claims. 4th pick: #7 (Por Favor) - Plunges in his second start off a Contessa Claim. First start for the new trainer was pretty ugly and he's dropped to half of what they paid for him. Has races in his past that make him a threat. BELMONT PARK Race #2 at 1:30 PM Eastern Top pick: #2 (PROPENSITY) - Barn (Jim "007" Bond) has been on fire since the end of the Saratoga meet(10-6-0-2). This runner ran a very big race last out at this distance. Started from a poor post (11), broke slowly and rallied strongly to just miss. Nice draw today and a repeat can win this. 2nd pick: #3 (Western Dynamo) - Logical selection is coming off his best race to date finishing a strong second on this course at this distance. The top pick beat him two back by only a length. That slim a margin can easily be reversed. Win threat. 3rd pick: #1 (Sol a Pino) - Looks like the main speed, and he has the hedge advantage. In the barn of Hall of Famer Bill Mott, colt is set-up well for a big effort. 4th pick: #9 (Kaptain) - Lightly raced, has some speed, is in a good barn (Chris Clement), but he'll need to step it up to be a win threat. Special Race Notes: Selections for the main track: #11-All Verses #2-Propensity #5-Cat Ridge Road BELMONT PARK Race #4 at 2:30 PM Eastern Top pick: #3 (Apocalyptical) - Filly has run well enough in her last pair of turf races to win this at a very nice price. Poor posts in those two contests helped do her in, yet she wasn't beaten by much. Could surprise these. 2nd pick: #5 (Dove Nest) - The main speed will hang on one of these days. Her performances are about equal on dirt and turf and she should have little trouble sprinting away today. Eddie Castro gives it a go. 3rd pick: #7 (Intoxicatingbeauty) - She's finished third in all three of her turf sprints and filly had traffic woes in two of those. Needs to finish a bit stronger. 4th pick: #8 (Punt's Kitty) - Much improved race when she tried the grass last out. Finished well to gain the place after racing about 5 lengths off the top early. Makes her third lifetime start, Dominguez stays and blinkers go on. 5th pick: #4 (Tooralorracollara) - Improved last out when she finished second in her first grass attempt. Race had a very slow second quarter and this filly had a perfect trip. Contender, but she may be overbet. Special Race Notes: Selections for the main-track: #10-Professional Woman #5-Dove Nest #7-Intoxicatingbeauty #11-Scott's Choice SANTA ANITA Race #5 at 6:00 PM Eastern Top pick: #1 (RAZOR CUT) - He's had a lot of chances (12-0-2-3) but he draws a pretty weak group for the level. Speed/stalker tired in his latest after starting from the 12 post and moves to the rail today. Wins this by saving all the real estate. 2nd pick: #5 (It's in God's Hands) - Probable favorite had some problems at the break last out and then rushed up to set/press a very fast pace before backing-up late. Should run much better today. The main threat. 3rd pick: #2 (Bonneville Storm) - Firster by "Future Storm" is in a good barn (Pat Gallagher) and has some nice drills in preparation for his debut. 4th pick: #7 (Kauai) - Wide in his last and he also raced in traffic most of the way. Very nice work since and he could sneak away at a nice price. Horse Racing Picks Resources:
