Horse Racing Handicapper - October 14, 2008Racing news doesn't get much bigger than this, the announced retirement of Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Haskell winner "Big Brown". The story breaks just 12 days before he was to compete in the Breeder's Cup Classic. More on this later in the week. Wunderdog Racing will have the two-day Breeder's Cup event's Newsletters for Friday, October 24, and Saturday the 25, available on Thursday October 23. With the Columbus Day Holiday history, the major racing centers will be dark today and many again tomorrow. Belmont will reopen on Thursday. Today we have three from Delaware and one race from Philadelphia Park. Today's Best Bet is: #2 Merry Fox in Race #3 at Philadelphia Park. Monday's Results: Belmont Race #9 Top Pick #7 (Logic Way) $8.30. ![]() Today's Horse Racing Picks: Top pick: #2 (MERRY FOX) - She's finished second in all three of her starts at this claiming price. Has a nice post to save ground from and she just missed last out after a wide trip. Takes this with a "smart" ride. 2nd pick: #3 (Darkness Falls) - Nice looking maiden win in her first on this dirt and first start for trainer Bob Seeger. Lightly raced and she was in a good barn (Helen Pits) before coming to this circuit. 3rd pick: #5 (Tiger Dancer) - Good try last out at this condition and distance against slightly weaker. Speed/stalker will probably be put in the race right after the break. Contender. DELAWARE PARK Race #3 at 1:35 PM Eastern Top pick: #5 (BROWN'S HILL) - Goes turf to dirt and will drop back in for a tag. Competititive two back at this distance in the slop against $50K foes. Runs for half that price today and gets Dominguez. 2nd pick: #2 (Royal Sonata) - Stretches out off a pair of sprints for trainer Mike Gorham. Improved run second time out with the addition of blinkers. He too drops in half for this and he draws the rail post. Contender at a nice price. 3rd pick: #1 (Shyisha) - Good effort last out in a $50,000 race in the slop at this distance. Colt made a nice middle-move and finished a close-up fourth. Repeat of that one puts him in this. 4th pick: #1a (Yield Spread) - Coupled with "Shyisha" and only one will run. Last wasn't half bad as he stalked the pace at this distance and tired a bit late. Exotics threat if he goes. DELAWARE PARK Race #4 at 2:05 PM Eastern Top pick: #1 (EMOTIVAL) - The main speed and he has the rail advantage. Wired a field sprinting last out when dropped to this tag for the first time. South American import showed good speed against better earlier this season on the New York circuit. Can take these wire-to-wire. 2nd pick: #7 (Owen Meany) - Drops and gets the services of Ramon Dominguez. The last time this colt ran for this $12,500 tag he won "in-hand." Contender with a move just past the half. 3rd pick: #4 (Editor's Column) - In great shape at present and he's really come to hand since a claim by Mike Petro four starts back. Easy winner of his last pair, these are a bit tougher. Present form is too good to ignore. DELAWARE PARK Race #7 at 3:25 PM Eastern Top pick: #7 (SIR OZ) - Ran his best race to date last out when trainer Mike Gorham sent him long for the first time. He was no match for a runaway drop-down but he was clear of the third finisher by over 10 lengths. The choice for the win. 2nd pick: #6 (Hillybilly Deluxe) - Had late trouble last out at Philly Park in his first start for trainer Scott Lake. Has some competitive races in the past and this field came up pretty weak. Shot at a decent price. 3rd pick: #4 (Polka At Night) - Very lightly raced (only two starts) and he improved quite a bit in his second run. Has some speed and any further improvement should have him in this. Horse Racing Picks Resources:
