Horse Racing Free Picks - October 12, 2008

The "Breeder's Cup World Thoroughbred Championships" are less than two weeks away and Wunderdog Racing will be "on top" and "in-step" with all the major developments. This year it is truly a two-day event with all the "distaff" features on Friday the 24th and the male races on Saturday the 25th. Our Racing Newsletters for both days will be available on Thursday the 23rd with detailed analysis and selections on the big races.

Today we have a four-spot with three races from Belmont and one from Santa Anita, the scene of this year's "Cup" races.

Today's Best Bet is #9 I'm Entitled in Race #7 at Belmont Park.

Today's Horse Racing Picks:

BELMONT PARK Race #1 at 1:00 PM Eastern

Top pick: #5 (HAWKWOOD) - Freshened up for the past two months after an impressive wire-to-wire win at Saratoga to clear the 1X allowance condition. Latest pair of works are fast and gelding could turn out to be a real talented runner.
2nd pick: #1 (Benny the Waiter) - The main danger is also returning from a layoff (six weeks) and his last pair of works indicate that he's ready to roll. Inside draw helps and he's a major threat.
3rd pick: #7 (Wolfson) - The most likely to crack the top two especially if they engage in an early speed duel. He was easily defeated at the Spa by the top choice.

BELMONT PARK Race #5 at 3:00 PM Eastern
Top pick: #9 (SEEKING LUCK) - Blinkers are added by trainer Barclay Tagg as this nicely-bred filly will move to the grass and attempt a distance, both for the first time. She showed some speed in her dirt debut. Think she'll improve significantly.
2nd pick: #6 (Warm Shower) - Debuting daughter of "Dynaformer" cost $700,000 at Auction in '07. Solid series of works for a very under-rated trainer (Angel Penna Jr.).
3rd pick: #7 (Siren Serenade) - Scheduled to race on the grass last out, she ran anyway when the race was "switched." Beautifully-bred Phipp's filly could easily improve enough on the surface switch.
4th pick: #8 (Fast Tigress) - Moves back to the infield after finishing a distant third in an "off the turf" event. Prior grass race was o.k. as she finished evenly despite some traffic woes.

BELMONT PARK Race #7 at 4:00 PM Eastern
Top pick: #9 (I'M ENTITLED) - Quick runner is positioned outside the other speed and think he'll get a trip tracking "Fra" and be able to go by that one turning for home.
2nd pick: #4 (Fra Lippo) - Speedy gelding appears to be a bit of a "free" spirit and has proven very hard to handle in his last pair. Freshened-up since August 23,the patient hands of Chris Clement may have settled him down a bit.
3rd pick: #6 (Mahopac) - Last was better than it looks, as he raced in heavy traffic down on the hedge and both horse and rider were a bit intimidated late. Nice drill on Oct. 7 and he's ready to run well.
4th pick: #7 (Winloc's Saint Ray) - Colt has improved his game considerably since switching to the turf. He's got some finishing punch and he'll be cutting back in distance off his last at Saratoga.

OAK TREE AT SANTA ANITA Race #4 at 5:00 PM Eastern
Top pick: #10 (IF NOT FOR YOU) - Moves outside and she's coming off a pair of sharp efforts at Del Mar and Fairplex. Stalking ability and a drop in her claiming price give her a big chance.
2nd pick: #7 (Warren's Dreaming) - Logical contender will make her first start for the powerful Hollendorfer operation off a claim on August 25. Filly has hit the board in four of five and new trainer is 29% with his recent buys. Win contender.
3rd pick: #3 (Warrensgoodwarrior) - Goes second off a three-month layoff for trainer Jorge Gutierrez. Latest saw her race evenly at Del Mar and she should appreciate the seven furlong distance of this contest.
4th pick: #2 (Halo's Clean Sheet) - Drops off a return race at Fairplex which saw her have trouble with the sharp turns. Think she'll go better in the return to a normal track.
5th pick: #1 (Kind Lady) - Broke slowly in her debut at Del Mar in August at the MSW level and will drop into a claimer off the seven week rest. Look for major improvement today.
