Kentucky Derby Picks - October 10, 2008With the "Breeder's Cup" only two weeks away we'll have a race both tomorrow and Sunday from Santa Anita as we'll try our luck on their new "pro-ride" surface. Today we have four races from Belmont Park for selections and analysis. Best Bet is #7 Masterwork in Race #7 at Belmont Park. ![]() Today's Horse Racing Picks: Top pick: #8 (CLOUD NINE) - Freshened up since failing in his first three efforts against winners. He had trouble in a pair of those runs and chased a fast pace in the other. Working well for his return and he can take this from just off the pace. 2nd pick: #4 (Exchanging Kisses) - Speedy runner drops and shortens up in his second start against winners. Has a very sharp work on Oct. 3, and he has run well on this course (3-0-3-0). Major contender. 3rd pick: #7 (Senor Enrico) - Another who shortens up and drops. Colt was claimed three back for $20,000 and has faced tougher in his first pair for the new trainer (Randi Persaud). 4th pick: #1 (Phobia) - Speedy sort will most certainly face pace-pressure from "Kisses". He'll need to sprint clear and hold on. Not impossible, but it will be tough. BELMONT PARK Race #2 at 1:30 PM Eastern Top pick: #8 (SPIRITUAL SPIRITS) - Obvious contender and probable favorite, finished second last out at this tag and distance to a prompt "chalky" winner who went virtually wire-to-wire. Nice post for this stalker should land him in the winner's circle. 2nd pick: #3 (Oh So Irish) - IEAH/J.P.Terranova runner will makes his first start in six weeks. Drops to a new low in price and will go turf to dirt. Win contender. 3rd pick: #5 (Stephen's Rhythm's) - Comes back from the west coast where he finished third at Del Mar in a six-furlong sprint running for $32K. Working steadily since returning, lightly-raced colt is a factor here. BELMONT PARK Race #6 at 3:30 PM Eastern Top pick: #2 (IT'S GOODTOBEKING) - Had all kinds of problems in the slop early on in his most recent. Rider had some horse, but gelding was forced to slam on the breaks twice and became a bit discouraged. Ready to show his best. Coupled in the wagering with "Fort McCoy". 2nd pick: #2b (Fort McCoy) - Ran evenly at Saratoga last out in his first race in nine months. Drops into a claimer and goes turf to dirt for the Linda Rice barn. More than capable stablemate of the top pick. 3rd pick: #4 (Western Call) - Much better effort last out in his second start back from a two month layoff. Rallied late in the slop and the figure earned was his best ever. Nice drill since and he's a win contender. 4th pick: #1 (Another Hades) - Rallied late in the slop to finish a distant third last out in a race where "Western Call" defeated him. Son of "Artax" has hit the board in seven of 14 without winning. Late threat. 5th pick: #5 (Five Cases) - Has a little ability, but it would be a surprise to see him pick up more than a minor award. BELMONT PARK Race #7 at 4:00 PM Eastern Top pick: #7 (MASTERWORK) - Hung a bit against much tougher last out when he was making his first start in almost 10 months. Drops and goes 2nd off the bench for the powerful Richard Dutrow barn. Very tough to beat. 2nd pick: #6 (Repenthouse) - The seven furlong distance of this race should play to his style and this will be the lowest tag he has ever raced for. Capable of an exacta finish with a late run. 3rd pick: #5 (Raffie's Deer) - Makes his first start since February and first for trainer Steve Asmussen. New York-bred has finished close-up before and new trainer is a strong 22% with new arrivals to his barn. 4th pick: #4 (County Galway) - Drops, makes his third start and gets blinkers on. Pace factor could hang on for a share. Horse Racing Picks Resources:
