Horse Racing Methods Systems - October 07, 2007Today we have selections and analysis on four races from Belmont Park and Santa Anita. A reminder that tomorrow is Columbus Day, so the major racing centers will be open. As a result they will be dark this Wednesday. Today's Best Bet is #4 Colonel John in race #3 at Santa Anita. ![]() Today's Horse Racing Picks: (# 3) DARJEELING - Quite a turnaround for this daughter of "Cat Thief" in last start. In first attempt for trainer Jimmy Toner after a switch to his barn, she just whistled on August 29 at Saratoga, going virtually wire-to-wire. Training well here at Belmont, she should get win number two. (# 2) Quality Affair - Big speed and big workouts in tow for first effort off a seven-month layoff. Filly cost $285,000 as a yearling and is in the care of Mr. Allen Jerkens. Has the rail and would expect her to try and steal this. (# 1A) Carolina Fuego - Ran second at Delaware Park in a small stakes to a filly who has won all of her starts since moving to the barn of Tony Dutrow. This filly did well chasing the whole race and staying on well to hold down the place. Should receive a nice stalking trip here behind a fast pace. (# 5) Come Fly Away - Got the maiden win in game fashion in her first race ever on conventional dirt. Hushion is having a great meet so far, and this well-bred miss may yet improve some more. SANTA ANITA Race #THREE (4:30 PM Eastern) (# 4) COLONEL JOHN - Probable favorite, ran a great race in debut at Del Mar from the No. 12 post, surviving a bumping incident to just miss. Son of "Tiznow" is working spectacularly over this surface for start No. 2. Would key him in exotics. (# 9) Usurp - Nice debut run at Del Mar for the always potent Ellis barn. Stalked, bid strongly, just failed to get up. Working well over at Hollywood for this second outing. (#'s 1 and 1A) Huss the King and Milwaukeebrewkaro - Ron McAnally trained entry, and we like the straight No. 1("Huss the King") much more than the other half. May offer some exotics value. (# 6) Cohen Thebarbarian - Half-million dollar son of "Pulpit" gets blinkers on today, after a so-so effort in debut on Sept. 1 at Del Mar. Was between horses much of the way and finished well out into the course. May improve greatly today. BELMONT PARK Race #EIGHT (4:40 PM Eastern) (# 2) GULCH FEVER - Nice spotting by leading trainer Gary Contessa as runner goes third off a layoff after facing open claimers in last at the Meadowlands. Impossible post(11) on that tight course, yet he still bid strongly while wide. Faces restricted claimers today, and you'll get the leading trainer at a price. (# 1A) Brushed Prince - Probable pace setter, or at the very least the pace-prompter, in a race without much speed on paper. Distance is fine, and Coa, who was aboard in his maiden win, takes over again. (# 4) Perrycardius - Possible favorite is slowly coming around after nine months on the sidelines. Lack of speed is a concern, but he hinted that he was getting back to his mid-pack style in last. Class drop from allowances can only help. Serious contender. (# 5) Classic Impact - Good run from a poor post(12) two back at Saratoga. Appeared to be heading in the right direction, but a troubled start in next hindered any further progress. May rebound at a big price. SANTA ANITA Race #FOUR (5:05 PM Eastern) (# 7) MIDNIGHT EXCESS - Very nice debut effort at Del Mar on Sep. 5. Broke from the rail in a large field (11), made a big middle move, got the lead in mid-stretch, and was out-gamed at the wire. Given a month between starts, he has three strong works in the interim over this new surface. (# 8) Skimmetry - Frankel-trained colt made his debut in the same race as the top selection. Chased the pace from his inside post, and ran evenly through the stretch. Three works since for him also, but they are at his homebase of Hollywood Park. (# 14) Warren's Scooter - Has run well over the Del Mar poly surface, and conventional dirt at Fairplex. Draws an excellent post for the seven-furlong distance, and attracts Nakatani today. He and trainer Gutierrez are 28% over the past two years. (#'s 1 and 3) Da Benchy and Monastery Scandal - Would use this pair in small exacta boxes with the top selection. ![]() Horse Racing Picks Resources:
