Handicapping Horse Racing - October 04, 2007

Today we have selections and analysis on four races from Belmont Park.

Today's Best Bet is #3 Optimistic Steve in Race # 7 at Belmont Park.

Wednesday's Results: Belmont Park Race #1 Top Pick Winner #7 (Indian Hawke) Paid $5.90.

Belmont Park Race #7 Top Pick Winner #7 (Allright Now) Paid $3.70.

Belmont Park Race #8 Best Bet #5 (Thru N Thru) Paid $3.60. Exacta Best Bet with 2nd pick (5-2) Paid $12.40.

Today's Horse Racing Picks:

BELMONT PARK Race #ONE (1:00 PM Eastern)

(#1) KATS GOLDEN WAYS - Nearly overcame a pedestrian pace on Sept. 12 switching back to Belmont Park off a five-week freshening. Rallied strong into the stretch, but simply could not match strides with a determined winner in the final yards. Draws a good inside post. This is her second off a break and that scenario has been successful in the past.
(#'s 2 and 2B) Higher Incentive and Itsnotthemoney - We'll take either half of this Contessa entry as our second choice. Both are coming off of good efforts and appear to be approaching peak runs.
(# 6) Visual Candy - Blinkers go on today and filly ran very well here at Belmont earlier in the season.
(# 4) Morning Gallop - Tries turf for only the third time in 23 starts. No speed to speak of, but she has kept better company for most of her career.

BELMONT PARK Race #TWO (1:30 PM Eastern)
(# 5) REVERSIBLE ERROR - Showed surprising early speed to chase a very fast pace in her second career start - a telltale sign of improving form. She held well, giving futile chase to a runaway winner in a fast race. Has continued to train well at Suffolk for capable trainer Grusmark.
(# 7) Fairy Godmother - Price should be square for filly getting an extra furlong today to strut her stuff. Blinkers come off and she is working very well here at Belmont since the end of the Saratoga meet.
(# 4) Chanced - Raced like a filly in need of the initial start, and she is working extremely well since that first run. Trainer (Levine) can straighten them out in a hurry.
(# 1A) Dana Dew - Ran much better in start No. 2 with the addition of Lasix. Well-bet in her two Spa. runs, but they were nothing special.

BELMONT PARK Race #THREE (2:00 PM Eastern)
(# 5) FLY SO FAR - Made up significant ground over a moisture-laden Philly Park track on Sept. 11 off a layoff. He did well to finish second behind an impressive winner in an extremely quick race. He returns to New York and stretches out to seven furlongs, which should fit him well. Softer pace here should have him closer to the lead, and he will be more fit coming second off the bench.
(# 6) Dashboard Drummer - Contessa gelding makes his third run off a seven-week layoff. Capable with these, he should have good position as they hit the turn.
(# 7) He's a Pioneer - Right behind the top pick in last at Philly Park. Has a good stalking gear, and makes his third run off a layoff.
(# 8) Champ Safi - Doesn't race very often, but when in the mood (such as May 2)he can fire a big race. He had speed at one time, but has become a one-run closer.

BELMONT PARK Race #SEVEN (4:00 PM Eastern)
(# 3) OPTIMISTIC STEVE - Catches a complete makeover today. Gets a trainer change to Badgett, drops in class, turns back to one turn, gets a rider switch to Garcia, cuts back in distance and faces straight three-year-olds. Race is loaded with speed types and that should aid his style. Ran well here at Belmont before shipping to Saratoga.
(# 8) Fight On - Clearly the fastest of these early on, he's also been freshened up by trainer John Parisella. Working well, he'll take them as far as he can.
(# 4) Spirtual Call - Improved run when he returned to Belmont, and it's also the scene of his only win. Still lightly raced, he may still be able to improve some. Trainer Stanley Hough is having a great meet.
(# 1) Exceleration - Improved effort in last at the Spa., and when Contessa runners show some spark it's time to take notice.
