Horse Racing Picks - October 02, 2008Keeneland opens it's short fall meet (17 days) this Friday and some of early stakes will have an effect on the "Breeder's Cup World Thoroughbred Championships" later this month at Santa Anita. Also, this Sunday Woodbine is hosting several important turf stakes that will feature many European runners who have an eye pointed towards the "Cup" races in California. Today we have another four contests from Belmont Park. Today's Best Bet is #4 Silver Knockers in Race #3 at Belmont park. Wednesday's Results: Belmont Race #3 Top Pick #5 (On With It) $5.00. ![]() Today's Horse Racing Picks: Top pick: #2 (SAFARI KID) - Much improved since switching to the barn of "Hall of Famer" Wayne Lukas. Faster, gamer, and just a better animal all around since the transfer. The horse to beat. 2nd pick: #1 (Fullmongoose) - West Coast transplant finished second last out in his third start since switching locales and coming to the barn of Greg DiPrima. Threat from the rail. 3rd pick: #8 (Run Lightening Run) - Cuts back in distance after failing to fire on a sloppy track last out going a mile. Capable at this tag and distance, he has some back efforts that put him in the small win mix. 4th pick: #7 (Two Run Shot) - Tired in his debut after chasing a runaway winner. "Mongoose" rallied by him late for the place. Could improve today, but faces pace pressure from the choice. BELMONT PARK Race #3 at 2:00 PM Eastern Top pick: #4 (SILVER KNOCKERS) - In shape runner is coming off a nice win at Saratoga at seven furlongs in a small stakes race. Working fast since that effort for trainer Nick Zito, she's the horse to beat. 2nd pick: #3 (City Bird) - Speedy sort will stretch out today for trainer Richard Dutrow after three solid sprint tries, including a "smashing" win on this track two back. Dangerous foe who has big speed. BELMONT PARK Race #6 at 3:30 PM Eastern Top pick: #7 (SOPHIES SPLINTER) - Drops back down to a $25,000 claiming price and his previous pair at that level produced second place finishes. Has speed/stalking ability and think it may be graduation day. 2nd pick: #9 (SLICK WHEELIE) - Improving sort draws a nice post for the distance. Has several on his resume that say he can win this and this lightly raced runner is a win contender. 3rd pick: #1 (Knife and Fork) - Didn't fire last out sprinting at the maiden-special level. Son of "City Zip" finished a solid second two back running for $35K. Speed threat from the rail. 4th pick: #2 (Grantor) - Good human connections (Barry Schwartz/Mike Hushion) send out this son of "Broken Vow" as he switches from turf to dirt and drops into a claimer. He should run better with those two changes. BELMONT PARK Race #7 at 4:05 PM Eastern Top pick: #2 (JET SETTING) - Filly may have needed her last badly as she hadn't raced in five months. Barn (Steve Asmussen) likes to pull this turf to dirt move (28%) and they're also solid second time back (20%). Daughter of "Forestry" has some talent and could cause a bit of a mild upset here. 2nd pick: #8 (Caseys Tribe) - Consistent speed/stalker is in a great barn (Bruce Levine) and has fired in all but her debut run. Contender. 3rd pick: #5 (Sort of Tricky) - Very speedy "Miss" will try and win this on the front end. Tired in her return race on the Saratoga turf, she, like the top pick, will be switching back to the dirt. Filly must be caught. 4th pick: #7 (Pennylove) - Lightly-raced four-year-old won her last with a late charge when the speed collapsed late. Would need a similar scenario to be sucessful again.
