Horse Racing Selections - October 01, 2008It is hard to believe that October is already upon us. As most racing fans know, this is the month of the "Breeder's Cup World Thoroughbred Championships." This year it will be a full two-day event with all filly and mare races contested on Friday October 24, and the males taking center stage the following day on the Oct. 25. Many final preps will be run this weeekend and we'll keep you informed as to the make-up of the fields for each event as the month goes along. Today, with Belmont open, we'll go there for a four spot. Today's Best Bet is #8 Lyke A Hurricane in Race #3 at Belmont Park. Tuesday's Results: Delaware Park Race #7 Best Bet #2 (Balrog) $6.80. Philadelphia Park Race #10 Top Pick # 6 (Dr. Dale) $4.60. ![]() Today's Horse Racing Picks: Top pick: #8 (LYKE A HURRICANE) - Brings the best recent form and the best "figures" of the entire field. Speed/stalker fits, is working well, and keeps Prado. The horse to beat. 2nd pick: #5 (On With It) - Good grass debut on this course Sep. 5th in which he broke his maiden. Lightly raced and in a great grass barn (Linda Rice) he appears to have a bright future. 3rd pick: #2 (Prime Obsession) - Has the ability to run big at times, but he's a large gelding and in many of his starts he encounters trouble of some sort. If he breaks with his field he'll run well. 4th pick: #12 (Felinefelon) - Speedy colt will be a factor if he draws into the race. Capable of posting very fast fractions, this would be his turf debut if he gets to run. 5th pick: #3 (Fire Marshal) - Has a strong turf race on view earlier this year going "long" on the Aqueduct lawn. Last on the dirt at Saratoga wasn't bad, and he draws the hedge for this grass sprint. Exotics player at a nice price. BELMONT PARK Race #4 at 2:30 PM Eastern Top pick: #6 (ONIYOME) - Logical selection and probable favorite has already won at this distance, on this track, though she was subsequently disqualified. Tractable style is a big plus and should prove decisive. 2nd pick: #3 (Study Abroad) - Returns from western New York and a troubled effort in the "New York Oaks" at Finger Lakes. A stakes winner on this course, she should rebound from the poor try last out. 3rd pick: #1 (Raffie's Treasure) - Talented, lightly raced runner draws the rail and cuts back to one-turn after going "long" last out from a poor post at Saratoga. Post will dictate that she be involved early, but she's done that before. Her two "worst" races have been on this surface. 4th pick: #5 (Twistaway) - Training in fast fashion for her return from a 2 month freshening. She's done some fine work on this track (4-2-0-1) and could "surprise" them. BELMONT PARK Race #8 (THE PILGRIM) at 4:30 PM Eastern Top pick: #9 (RELATIVELY READY) - Impressive maiden win at Saratoga the first time he set foot on the turf. Won despite trouble and he was "clearly" the best horse. He's been given 6 weeks off by trainer Dave Donk and the last two works indicate he's ready to go. 2nd pick: #8 (Bittel Road) - Logical selection and probable favorite is 2 for 2, both on the grass, and he's the fields only stakes winner. The main danger. 3rd pick: #5 (Duke of Hamburg) - English-bred, French-raced son of "Dynaformer" will be making his North American debut and his first start of any kind in 3 months. Lasix and Prado are part of the package. Dangerous runner. 4th pick: #4 (Pynaformer) - Impressive debut at Saratoga when he finished a rallying 3rd to our top pick in here. Troubled start and a "rugged" trip last out saw him finish evenly. Runs well here at a square price. BELMONT PARK Race #9 at 5:00 PM Eastern Top pick: #11 (IRISH MAMA) - Claimed of her debut by trainer Tony Dutrow from Linda Rice for $50,000. Daughter of "Gold Token" just missed that day with a late rail rally. Sharp recent work and Dutrow's 34% stat fresh off the claim make her the horse to beat. 2nd pick: #1 (Quiet Sky) - Broke from the rail in her debut and was involved in a very fast pace for a maiden race. Drops into a claimer today and moves out in the gate. Prado sticks and trainer Richard Dutrow is a strong 26% 2nd time out. 3rd pick: #8 (Best For Last) - The probable main speed has shown good early foot against tougher at Saratoga. Drops and gets the addition of blinkers from trainer Tom Bush. Loses Prado, but picks up Coa. 4th pick: #5 (Bebobblues Art) - Fields most experienced runner has a couple competitive efforts and will drop a bit in claiming price today. Picks up a live rider in Lezcano, who is coming off a great Monmouth meet. 5th pick: #6 (Symbol) - Took some money in her debut at the Spa. but broke "awkardly" and raced evenly. Drops into a claimer and gets lasix for start number two. Horse Racing Picks Resources:
