Betting Guide Horse Racing - November 07, 2008

It was announced yesterday that Godolphin stables "Midshipman" the winner of this year's Breeder's Cup Juvenile (colts and geldings) will be prepared in his owner's home country of Dubai for next year's Kentucky Derby. Colt was trained in this country by Bob Baffert and would be under the care of Saeed bin Suroor while overseas.

Today we'll have four contests for selections and analysis, two each from Churchill Downs and Aqueduct.

Today's Best bet is #7 Princess Marquetry in Race #5 at Churchill Downs.

Wednesday's Results: Aqueduct Race #2 T-fecta (14-1a-2b) $120.50.
Ex. (14-1a) $26.60.

Aqueduct Race #7 Top Pick #8 (Seventh Street) $3.50.
Ex.  (8-4) $11.80.

Today's Horse Racing Picks:

CHURCHILL DOWNS Race #2 at 1:05 PM Eastern

Top pick: #1 (WESTERN SWEEP) - Claimed two back by Wayne Catalano, filly won in her first try for the new connections at Hawthorne. Closed into a slow pace that day in an impressive performance. Comes back at the same price and this barn can keep them sharp for a while. The choice for another win.
2nd pick: #3 (Thundering Jill) - Re-claim by the fine barn of Mike Maker. Filly has been a bit "dull" in her last pair, but won easily in the one and only start for this trainer earlier this year.
3rd pick: #5 (Sea Button) - Went wire-to-wire two back at this $25,000 tag and then tired last out against much tougher after setting the pace. Drop back to $25K means she'll be tough on the front end.

AQUEDUCT Race #3 at 1:20 PM Eastern
Top pick: #9 (MAHOPAC) - Moves back to the main track for this attempt after a pair of sharp races sprinting on the turf. Showed speed in his debut last July on the dirt and looks set-up well by his trainer (Mike Hushion).
2nd pick: #1 (Buffalo Tsunami) - Showed some talent in his only race, which was last May at Belmont. He's been on the shelf since, but he's worked five times in 24 days in October. Draws the rail and I think he'll run well.
3rd pick: #4 (Bullstar) - Runner has talent and he'll put it all together one of these days. First pair were on the turf and he had the misfortune last out in his dirt debut of drawing a tough group. Pair of very good works since indicate he'll run big.
4th pick: #5 (Sir Sapphire) - Has enough talent to hit the exotics but this race drew a "salty" crew, making a win difficult, but not impossible.

CHURCHILL DOWNS Race #5 at 2:30 PM Eastern
Top pick: #7 (PRINCESS MARQUETRY) - Drops sharply in class for the high-percentage Wayne Catalano barn, and if she avoids trouble should defeat this ordinary field.
2nd pick: #12 (Out Cold) - Filly has hit the board in seven of her 10 starts at this one-mile distance, and if she can secure some position from this post (12) before they hit the turn, she'll be in this at the end.
3rd pick: #1 (Buddhas Blessing) - Claimed this past July for this $5000 price she will drop back down to it after not much success against tougher.
4th pick: #3 (U.S.Bonds) - This race is lacking much speed on paper, so this filly could easily lead them a very long way at big odds. Don't sell too short.

AQUEDUCT Race #6 at 2:45 PM Eastern
Top pick: #1 (FIGGY'S FREUD) - Son of "Freud" ran a fine third in his debut on Oct. 9. Raced wide, bid, and held well that day in a race at this tag. Nice pair of works since and trainer Dom Galluscio is satisfactory second time out (14%). The choice for the win.
2nd pick: #6 (Coronation Day) - Tough call as he's run well in both of his races on the turf and will try the dirt for the first time. Freshened-up for two months by trainer George Weaver, he's working sharply and drops in for a tag.
3rd pick: #1a (Early Response) - Coupled in the wagering with the top choice, this colt by "Hook and Ladder" finished second in his firt two starts at this tag, before tiring last out in the slop against MSW foes. Drops for this and has a nice drill on Nov. 2.
4th pick: #5 (Thegraygiginthesky) - Firster resides in a barn (Jim Ryerson) that is much better than it's '08 record (34 for 313). Runner by "Myakovsky" has a pair of sharp half-mile drills on his resume.
