Horse Racing Best Bets - November 04, 2008Election Day 2008. There was a time not too many years ago when Thoroughbred tracks could not have racing the day of a general election. Of course back then, large crowds were an everyday occurrence at the nation's racetracks. Back in the late 60's into the early 70's attendance at New York's tracks averaged more than the New York Yankees did on an everyday basis. The formation of New York State's "Off Track Betting" corporation (the nation's first) began a long downhill road that has attendance at Aqueduct at about 2000 a day, with somewhere between 80% and 90% of the daily "handle" figures at all tracks coming from various off-track venues. Looks like the way the game has developed, that other than big-event days, that's not likely to change. Today's menu will consist of two races each from Delaware and Philadelphia Parks. Aqueduct and Churchill Downs will reopen tomorrow after a pair of dark days. Today's Best Bet is #1 Pure Vision in Race #1 at Philadelphia Park. Monday's Results: Philladelphia Park Race #4 Exacta (top two box 1-8) $28.40. ![]() Today's Horse Racing Picks: Top pick: #1 (PURE VISION) - Came here from Thistledown where she was a useful runner. She's run twice here at Philly and had poor post positions each time and was forced to race wide. Rail draw and a weak field give her a big chance. 2nd pick: #4 (One Tuff Bluff) - Finished evenly last out after tracking and making a bid in the same race as the top pick. Not much separated them at the end. 3rd pick: #5 (Crawling) - Another who comes out of the same race as the top two. She also had a poor post draw and raced wide. She's raced against better most of her career (with little success). DELAWARE PARK Race #3 at 1:10 PM Eastern Top pick: #4 (KARAKORUM ROULETTE) - Raced at a distance last out and offered no rally. Two previous races were sprints at the Meadowlands and she raced well in both. Longer race last out should set her up for this as she shortens-up. 2nd pick: #1 (Happens In Vegas) - Takes a big plunge in price as she ships down from New York for trainer Gary Contessa. She's been racing a bit "sour" of late but still retains some speed. Reduction in price should make her competitive. 3rd pick: #7 (Annika's Diamond) - Lightly raced, she was claimed last out by trainer Marc Vitali who works for the high profile Michael Gill. Cuts back in distance and drops off the claim. Tough call. 4th pick: #6 (Fivehundred to Win) - Not as talented as the top two, she's finished third once and in fourth place three times in her last four races, all at this tag. Minor award is possible. PHILADELPHIA PARK Race #4 at 1:35 PM Eastern Top pick: #1 (ENVIOUS) - Very fast filly goes third off a break. Improved speed noted in her latest and she draws the rail for this attempt. Looks like the early leader and she may hang on a long time at a big price. 2nd pick: #3 (Summer Pleasure) - Drops off a late September claim by trainer Chris Landicini. She's been away six weeks and only has a pair of slow breezes. Any of her last seven efforts before the claim would be good enough to win this. 3rd pick: #6 (No Alterations) - She finished a distant third last out at this tag after starting from a poor post (12) and racing wide. Race wasn't bad as she also had traffic problems on the turn. Should run better today. 4th pick: #8 (Maria's Victory) - She's been away since early September after having a productive year. Trainer Alfredo Velazquez is having a "break-out" year. If ready to race at her previous level, she's a player. DELAWARE PARK Race #5 at 2:05 PM Eastern Top pick: #8 (TANNED BEAUTY) - Just missed last out in her first try for the Gill/Hooper team after a recent claim. Speedy filly will shorten up a 1/2 furlong and she's the horse to catch and beat. 2nd pick: #5 (Ms, Crystal River) - Solid performer prior to her last at Philly Park when she brok through the gate before the start and did not race well. Fits here and is a major player. 3rd pick: #9 (Yont To) - Raced well at Philly Park last out for $7500 in her first start away from Charles Town. Drops to $5000 today and should receive a clear stalking trip. Possibility at a square price. 4th pick: #6 (Extensive Flight) - Minor award is her ceiling and she could hit the bottom of the tri and or super at big odds. Horse Racing Picks Resources:
