Horse Racing Entry - May 10, 2008One week from today "Big Brown" will head a field of 10-12 horses in the Preakness Stakes from Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. For a look at thr prospective field and a comment on the breakdown of the filly "Eight Belles" see the "Dog Pound" article below. On both Friday and Saturday of next week our newsletter will focus solely on Pimlico with four races on Friday, including the "Blacked Eyed Susan" stakes and five races on Saturday's card headed by the Preakness. Today we have a total of five races for selections and analysis, all from Belmont Park. Today's Best Bet is # 2 Iron Curtain in Race # 10 at Belmont Park. Friday's Results: Belmont Race #4 Top Pick Winner # 9 (Forest of Dreams) $3.60. Belmont Race #9 Exacta Box of top three (9-1) $51.50. Today's Horse Racing Picks: (# 9) HAWKWOOD - Very impressive win last out off a 7-week freshening by trainer Tony Dutrow. Race was his first in blinkers and he just "destroyed" the maiden group. Second finisher returned to win next out. He's worked fast since and looks to make it two in a row in his first start against winners. (# 6) Pay What You Owe - Raced evenly in his first on this circuit after shipping from So. California in a race won by the promising "Watboo." Broke his maiden at a "flat" mile next out and this will be his first against winners. Dangerous rival. (# 5) Chernobyl's Hero - Has a ton of experience and if in the mood can compete here. Latest at Aqueduct was one of his best ever and he should be involved in the exotics at a square price. (# 7) That'srightofficer - Held some promise earlier this year and trainer Rich Schosberg moves him back to the dirt after a try on the grass. He has a very fast work on May 1 and attracts Prado today. Look for better. BELMONT PARK Race #SEVEN (4:10 PM Eastern) (# 4) ONIYOME - Impressed with her win last out as she looked like the winner the minute they broke out of the gate. Drew away as much the best and did it with authority. Race was only her second lifetime start and she could prove to be a good one. Tries turf for the first time, but is bred for the switch. Barn (Mike Hushion) remains red-hot and this filly is the choice on turf or dirt in the event that the race comes off the grass. (# 7) Boxitup - Had position in latest but she "hung" in the last 1/8th. Solid turf record (6-1-2-2) and is experienced on this course (4-0-1-2). Filly comes back quickly for this (10 days) and is a win contender. (# 5) Laura's Fury - Clearly prefers the infield as her two best races ever have come on the grass. Filly has had three dirt-mile races to get her in shape and is coming off a claim by Jeremiah Englehart no doubt with grass in mind. (# 3) Dr. Jess Jr. - Veteran mare picked it up in her second start of the year to a level that she raced at last season. She has a win on this turf and has hit the board fourother times in 12 starts. BELMONT PARK Race #(Eight) THE BOLD RULER HDCP.(G3) (4:40 PM Eastern) (# 1) MAN OF DANGER - One of a pair from trainer Bruce Levine and they race uncoupled. Speedy type draws the rail and is working well since finishing second in the "Toboggan" and "Paumonock" stakes earlier this year. Tough customer on the inside. (# 2) Call Me Tony - The other Levine runner has been a "gem" of consistency his whole career and looked just super in his latest win at Aqueduct. Loves this track (9-5-2-2) and completes a strong hand for the trainer . (# 5) Executive Fleet - Solid runner has really picked it up since the fall. Clearly a much better animal than he was last summer and his ability to stalk has done wonders for him. Horse he just lost to last out (Bustin Stones) would be the choice here. (# 4) Forefathers - Talented and fast he is capable here, but will need his best to have any chance as he gives away a ton of experience to the top trio. BELMONT PARK Race #(NINE) THE PETER PAN (G2) (5:15 PM Eastern) (# 6) READY'S ECHO - Appears to be a big player in this and in any future events that are on his schedule. Impressed in his only race at two, rallying from 20 lengths back to finish second. Broke his maiden in his 2008 debut at Gulfstream and followed that up by just misssing at Keeneland in his first try going long and first against winners. (# 5) Golden Spikes - Speedy sort proved last out that he can race outside of Florida by finishing second in the Illinois Derby. He worked well at Calder before shipping last Sunday and the nine-furlong distance of this event is not a problem. (# 3) Mint Lane - He's been improving for some time now and recently finished second in the "Tesio" stakes at Pimlico. Trainer Jimmy Jerkens sends him into this sharp and names Coa today. (# 7) Cosmic - Colt is two-for-two at this demanding nine-furlong distance and he has been improving for trainer "Shug" McGaughey. He would benefit by a fast/contested pace and versatile sort may be better down the line on grass. BELMONT PARK Race #TEN (5:45 PM Eastern) (# 2) IRON CURTAIN - Speed on the hedge and his best race ever was on this surface last fall. Hasn't raced since mid-October, but trainer Steve Klesaris is a great 32% with this type of returnee. His speed may get him a wire-to-wire win. (# 6) Wonderous Day - Shortens up for trainer Mark Hennig off a wide try going two-turns at Aqueduct. Ran well last season on this course and he looks ready for a big try. Coa's presence is noted. (# 4) Writingonthewall - Sharp debut on the dirt for Carlos Martin on Feb. 8. Stayed up near the pace and held the place late. Working sharply for this, his first try on the grass, and Prado is enticed. (# 1) Prime Obsession - Much better on turf than dirt, he moves back to the infield off a much needed seasonal debut on the dirt. On the board in six-of-seven on the grass and in four out of five on this surface. Horse Racing Picks Resources:
