Handicapping Horse Racing - June 30, 2008
It's another Monday without major track action. Today we'll mix it up with a pair from Delaware, and one each from Colonial Downs and Philadelphia Park.
Today's Best Bet is #6 Uncle Serazzo in Race #3 at Colonial Downs.
Sunday's Results: Belmont Park Race #2 Top Pick #2 (Dulcet Tone) $3.90.
Belmont Park Race #3 Best Bet #7 (Mithaal) $4.90.
Exacta Best Bet with second pick (7-6) $16.60.
Belmont Park Race #6 Top Pick #3 (Cobblestone Way) $5.90.
Today's Horse Racing Picks:
DELAWARE PARK Race #ONE (12:45 PM Eastern)
(# 1) VANQUISHED - Filly by "Empire Maker" has shown some talent in her first two trips to the post, one sprinting at Gulfstream and the other going long at Keeneland. Draws the rail, is working well, and attracts Dominguez. The horse to beat.
(# 6) Jasmine Gardens - Troubled starts in her first three races have taken their toll, as she has had to rush into the race early and it has cost her late. Freshened up since May 11, her recent work activity looks like she is over her bad habits. Win contender.
(# 3) Mizen Head - Made the top in her last after tracking the leaders, drew clear but was passed late. Race was her first distance attempt and was encouraging. Trainer Jim Murphy adds blinkers to her equipment today.
DELAWARE PARK Race #FIVE (2:30 PM Eastern)
(# 5) MOUNTAIN SONG - Filly has raced sharply after shipping here from Louisiana. Finished second two back and then looked good winning her last on June 11. Improving at this stage and she's the choice for the win.
(# 6) Cori's Star - New York shipper has a good turf mark (10-1-3-3), but most have come at longer distances. Latest at seven-furlongs was good at Belmont and trainer Dave Jacobson drops her down for this. The main danger.
(# 1) Queen of Laughs - Deep-closer breaks from the rail and will need a fast pace and a clean trip to have any chance at more than a minor award. Difficult, but not impossible assignment.
(# 7) Bar Fly Blues - She's one-for-one on the grass and she defeated the top pick in winning. Filly had a perfect trip that day and moves out in the gate today. Faces a tougher task here.
PHILADELPHIA PARK Race #SIX (2:30 PM Eastern)
(# 4) IGOR - Fourteen-time winner enters this with two in a row and has done so in wire-to-wire fashion. Runner was re-claimed by Bob Seeger earlier this season and has been his ususl consistent self. Can rate just off the #2 runner and win this on the far turn.
(# 6) Findee's Keepees - Recent re-claim by trainer Tim Shaw responded with an easy wire-to-wire win against weaker. Steady, consistent runner may have to rate here with other speed types signed on to his inside. Needs a good trip.
(# 1) Head Games - Drops and switches surfaces for the Jayne Vader's barn. Runner was in a bit "deep" in his last pair and is back at a tag where he is very competitive.
COLONIAL DOWNS Race #THREE (5:55 PM Eastern)
(# 6) Uncle Serazzo - Bred to run on the grass, this son of "You and I" has raced well in his two infield appearances, one here and the other at Lone Star last summer. Goes for a tag today and that drop from a maiden-special is significant. Wins this from just off the pace.
(# 4) Our Chief Justice - Gelding showed some speed last out in a Virginia-bred maiden-special here on June 10. Race was his best yet and came off a seven-month layoff. Drops into an open claimer and his speed is a big plus.
(# 7) S'no Surrender - Firster from the sharp barn of Howard Wolfendale is working steadily and is bred for grass success on the dam's side. Latest drill was sharp and he need not be much to impact this field.
