Horse Racing Handicapping - June 29, 2009The major venues are dark today and tomorrow, so our Monday menu features a pair each from Delaware and Philadelphia Park. Today's Best Bet is #1 Dr. Smarty Jack in Race #7 at Philadelphia Park. Sunday's Results: Belmont Park Race #1 Best Bet #8 (Frozen Prospect) $10.40. ![]() Today's Horse Racing Picks: Top pick: #8 (FASTER) - Filly hasn't raced since November 3, but will run for the first time for trainer Pete Walder and will also race with blinkers on. Trainer wins first out with 31% of his new stock and at a 20% rate on the blinker angle. Can take this at a square price. 2nd pick: #1 (Sphynx Key) - Virtually eased in her latest in a switched race here June 15. Previous turf race (a sprint at Pimlico) indicates she likes the grass and should run well in this spot. 3rd pick: #5 (Arms Race) - Improving runner finished a pace-setting second in an "off the turf" event here on June 7. Bred for turf success, she should be competitive today in her first race on the infield. 4th pick: #6 (Scene Not Heard) - Filly returns to the grass after racing competitively in a pair of "off the turf" races on the local dirt. Last turf race saw her just miss at this price racing at Pimlico on May 14. PHILADELPHIA PARK Race #7 at 2:55 PM Eastern Top pick: #1 (DR. SMARTY JACK) - Looms large over this field in several ways. Broke his maiden at Belmont and son of "Smarty Jones" has yet to run a bad race. In a top turf barn (Chris Clement) and runner draws the hedge for the best use of his fine tactical speed. Very tough to defeat. 2nd pick: #4 (Yer Man) - Broke running on June 1, established a clear early lead and was never really threatened as he won "geared down" in the last 1/8th. Lightly raced and he seems to love the infield. Can compete here in his first against fellow winners. 3rd pick: #5 (Brave Tiger ) - Has won on the turf before and raced well a long time ago on this grass course (finishing second). Very sharp dirt form in his last pair and they came first off a claim by trainer Tom Maria. Don't dismiss. PHILADELPHIA PARK Race #9 at 3:50 PM Eastern Top pick: #7 (READY TO PLAY) - Runs today third start back off a long layoff and he closed very fast last out to just miss getting up. He had a poor post that day (11) and had some traffic issues on the far turn. The top pick. 2nd pick: #8 (King Macho) - He defeated the top pick last out in a dead game effort. Gelding was involved in a heated pace duel from start-to-finish and just failed to hang on. Expecting another strong try this afternoon. 3rd pick: #9 (Chamoco Loco) - He finished fourth in his latest and wasn't that far off the win. That effort came in the same contest as our top pair and this runner is guaranteed to be a much bigger price than that duo. Contender. 4th pick: #4 (Downtown Hamill) - Bred for the grass, yet he curiously has never raced on it. Has some talent and could run well here at a nice price as he'll be over-looked in the betting. DELAWARE PARK Race #8 at 4:20 PM Eastern Top pick: #7 (ROSA GRACE) - Talented import hasn't race on the grass since last summer/fall. At that time she finished second in a stakes at Saratoga (her North American debut), then raced evenly in a strong field at Woodbine in an importanr Grade 1 contest. Working well for this, filly didn't care for the "Poly" surface at Keeneland in her '09 debut. The top choice. 2nd pick: #1a (Opera Heroine) - Makes her seasonal debut a light '08 campaign that saw her go (5-2-1-0). Daughter of "Partner's Hero" likes this surface (4-2-0-1) and has run well off af breaks before. Contender if ready, she's coupled in the wagering with "Wilderness TRace". 3rd pick: #9 (Star Emerald) - She makes her third start off a 100-day layoff and improved in her second back. In a good barn (Mike Matz), filly by "Pulpit" can compete here with her best effort. 4th pick: #6 (Amies Legend) - She finished fourth at Laurel on April 9 in her turf debut and has since won a pair of dirt races, including a $50,000 state-bred stakes at Pimlico. Very steady in her "figures" she'll need to step it up, if as expected, the top pick comes ready for her best.
